Jan. 31. 1976 58 Manheim FFA team wins engine contest Seven vocational agriculture departments participated in the Lan caster County Small Gasoline Engine Contest which was held recently at Manhetm Central High School. Final team placings for the day were: Manheim Central - Ist; with 288.5 points, New Holland - 2nd with 252, Penn Manor 226, followed by Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Solanco and Pequea Valley. High Individuals were Darryl Wenger 144.5, Grain stocks high WASHINGTON - As of Jan. 1, all feed grain stocks in the U.S. are up 138 million metric tons - an increase of 21 per cent over the preceding year. Broken down, the increase goes like this: Com, 4.4 billion bushels on hand - up 22 per cent from a year ago. Sorghum grain is up 25 per cent from a year ago with 476 million bushels stored away . That figure, however, is 26 percent below the Jan. 1,1974 levels. Oats is down by one per cent compared to a year ago, with 501 million bushels stashed away in the nation’s bins. Barley stocks are at around 277 million bushels, down by one per cent from last year. Soybean production from 1974 and 1975 harvests has left the country’s bean facilities fuller than ever before. With 1.25 billion bushels on hand, the amount is 26 per cent greater than last year’s stockpile. All wheat, at 1.4 billion bushels, is up by 25 per cent from a year ago; 49 per cent above Jan. 1, 1974 levels. But it’s below what we had in storage during the first three years of the seventees. Each contestant war quizzed in the areas of general information on engines, tools, and measurements. They had to show their competence and understanding of Parts and Service Manuals and of the Briggs and Stratton Repair Instructions IV. The major portion of the contest was based on knowledge and engine operation. Each engine was bugged before the contest. The team had to find the bugs, make corrections, start the engines, and adjust the engine for the proper RPM’s within 50 minutes. Kentetter recently presented a check of $42,500 to representatives of the York Interstate Fair. The presentation was made at the annual con vention of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs being held at the Host Inn here. The York Fair, perhaps the oldest in Pennsylvania, received the money to cover premiums paid in 1975 to people who displayed exhibits and purses paid to horsemen. Kerstetter noted was 31 minutes and 15 seconds. The teams from Manheim Central, New Holland, and Penn Manor will be going to the state Small Gasoline Engine Contest. It will be hcjd during FFA Activities Week at The Pennsylvania State University during June. that the fair drew crowds of more than 350,000 people in 1975, "which is certainly indicative of a very suc cessful season." Kerstetter, in an address at the convention, reported that to date $1,337,000 has been paid to Pennsylvania fairs to cover the costs of events, exhibits and premiums. This represents 90 percent of the funds ap plied for by the fairs. The remaining ten percent, or about $432,000, will be paid after completion of an an nual audit. Grants paid by the department’s Fair Fund are derived from harness and horse racing proceeds. In addition to these funds, a certain number of fairs each year can receive matching funds for capital improvements. Kerstetter reported that for 1975, a total of $540,604 was paid in matching funds to 49 fairs.
