Also this week we are featuring the first series of recipes from early Penn sylvania cookbooks. Although several of the measurements do not coincide with today’s we have printed the recipes as they were originally done. If you’d like to try them perhaps a measuring guide may be in good order and you’ll see why... A very special thanks to Mrs. Mary Wanner of Ephrata, Mrs. James Renner, Hatfield and Mrs. W. Haag, Malvern, who sent them in. From Michigan we also received a recipe for an “Impossible Pie”. That certainly sounds interesting! Granola Cereal 4 cups quick cooking oatmeal 3 cups whole wheat flour 1 cup wheat germ 1 cup white flour 1 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon salt 1 cup chopped nuts 1 cup cooking oil % cup water Mix dry ingredients, add water and oil and mix well. Mixture should be crumbly and more water can be added to make bigger crumbs. Put into two Urge flat pans and bake in slow oven turning every 20 minutes for 1% hours. Cool and store in airtight con tainer. For variations add 1 cup fine coconut or 1 cup raisins after cereal is browned. Edna Kisser Stevens, PA XXX Impossible Pie 4 eggs Vt stick butter or oleo 1% cups sugar Vi cup quick biscuit mix 2 cups milk 4 ounces coconut Beat eggs and melted butter with sugar, biscuit mix and milk. Continue beating during these ad ditions. Stir in coconut. Pour in 8 inch pie pans (ungreased). Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until knife inserted comes out clean. Saylor Elizabethtown, PA Applesauce Costard Pie 1 cup applesauce (un sweetened) 1 cup milk Vt cup sugar 2 eggs 1 taayoon flour 1 touwon fiwHul butter 1 taM|Moa vanilla ¥t teaspoon dnneznoa 1 unbaked t Inch pie shell Put applesauce, cin namon, melted butter, sugar and flour in a deep bowl. Beat egga together in a separate bowl then add to them the milk and vanilla. Add to the first mixture and blend well. Pour into pie crust and bake at 3SO degrees for 45 minutes. Mrs. W. Haag Malvern, PA XXX Queen's Cake Prom 1881 Cookbook 1 pound sugar 1 pound flour (sifted) 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder % pound butter 5 eggs 1 (gill) of sweet cream 1 teaspoon extract of nec tarine 1 tablespoon water 1 grated nutmeg Cream sugar and butter and add the eggs beaten very lightly. Add cream, flour and flavoring. Taylor Cake 1818 Recipe 7 eggs beaten separately beat the yolks with 2 pounds of sugar pads of butter 7 coffee cups of flour IVi teaspoons baking powder 1 pound currants 1 pound seeded raisins 3 nutmegs 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 pint of milk add the whites of eggs Combine ingredients and bake. Society 6 Society of Farm Women Group 6, Manchester, York Co., recently met at the home of Mrs. Raymond Wilt. In the absence of the Pres., vice pres. Mrs. Harold Gross presided. Mrs. C. A. Musser led devotions followed by the Lord’s prayer, pledge to the flag and singing "Brighten the Comer Where You Are”. Ten members answered the roll call by telling something that made their Christmas especially happy. Mrs. Harold Gross gave the report on the state convention held recently in Harrisburg. She said 15 of the 17 organized counties were represented. Mrs. D. Wilbur Erb was elected to the office of State President. A reading entitled “New Years Resolutions” was read. Mrs. Joan Taylor read a poem entitled “The Good Old Days” after which everyone enjoyed a “Dear Abby” program. The next meeting will be held Feb. 11 at the home of Mrs. Marian Hewitt. Mrs. Leroy Kendner Lenhartsvllle.PA XXX Lemon Strip Pie Ittfa Century Filling: 1% cup water % cup granulated sugar V 4 cup table sirup Vi teaspoon salt 1 beaten egg rind of 1 lemon one-third cup lemon Juice 5 level tablespoons corn starch mixed with V* cup water Mix all together and bring to boiling and simmer five minutes. Cool slightly and divide in crusts. Strips 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 cup flour 2 teaspoons baking powder V* teaspoon salt V* cup butter Blend all together as for pie pastry. Use about 6 tablespoons of milk to moisten and keep soft. Form into a ball and roll. Cut 8 -1 inch strips and place (hi filled crusts about 1 inch apart. Bake 45 minutes until filling bubbles and strips are brown. Mrs. Junes Renner Hatfield, PA XXX Salad Dressing 100 Years Old % teaspoon mustard 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon cornstarch V* teaspoon salt V* teaspoon pepper 1 egg 1 tablespoon vinegar Vi cup water Mix Ingredients and cook until thickened. Add 1 tablespoon butter and beat. Cool and use over lettuce. Mrs. W. Mrs. Gerald Erb, president, announced that the Spring Farm Women Rally will be held in Get tysburg at the Sheraton Inn on May 12, 1976.
