Comer Labeling has changed our shopping routine By MELISSA PIPER Trying to prepare a meal these days has become a challenge between the housewife and the scientists' If you've read the nutritional label on a box, can, jar (or reasonable facsimile thereof) lately you’ll know what I mean. Reaching for a box of pudding mix, the other day, I gasped loudly as I read the ingredients. Not one sounded familiar, except for several four syllable chemical names which twinged a slight hint of remembrance But, reflecting on the brown masses of glop which used to corrode my test tubes m organic chemistry, I finally threw the box back into the cup board and reached for another substitute! Since it became mandatory several months ago, nutritional labels have become commonplace in our society and many more shoppers are taking the time to read such information before they buy a product. A Pat Krall, Lebanon; Linda Franz, Lancaster and Roxanne Shermeyer-Price, York; serve area extensions as youth agents. coordinate 4-H work in area trip to the supermarket has almost become a college course between the calculators for figuring price per unit and interpreting the calories per gram. Many weekly shoppers have already gained their ‘‘bachelor’s degree" in food science which includes a good working knowledge of math, chemistry and biomechanics! Being deluged with such a variety of processed and prepackaged goods has really made nutritional labeling necessary and helpful for knowing just what ingredients and in what proportions they are in cluded. The information on protein, fats, carbohydrates and calories also serves a purpose for the shopper who wants to select the products which best suits her needs. Labeling and nutritional information has also made us realize that many of our foods which seem like RCX**’ ■»i> *■** * V everyday creations have really become “children the test tube." Spawned from artificial color, artific flavoring, texturized fiber, molded for specific shap and even to the point of capturing the real odor of tl product! Reflecting on that aspect, of the food we e is like reading a chapter from “Space 2300". I certainly have mixed emotions about nutrition labeling and yet I suppose that we’re probably bett off with it, however reading the cereal box in tl morning used to be more fun when they r< promotions for measuring spoons instead of ho many calories I was eating with or without eig ounces of milk. Visiting a supermarket about once a week, I’m st striving to get my degree in food science and ju about the time I’ve mastered the whole routine, tt 1 metric system will have become a law and I’ll have relearn the whole system! j
