While owning only 95 acres, the Kopfers rent an additional 425 which gives them a total of 520 505 of which are tillable. The balance is pastureland. He Is attempting to buy another farm this year. Converted to minimum tillage practices several years ago, Kopfer makes use of some of the latest field management techniques and equipment. An off-set disk and chisel plow are included in his machinery inventory. The main crop on the farm is com, of which 260 acres are raised. Some of it is used as high moisture com for his 90 steers. In addition to com, he raises 90 acres of wheat as a cash crop, 11 acres of barley, 40 acres of soybeans, and 80 acres of hay. Kopfer got bis start 20 years ago as a hired man on his neighbor’s farm. In 1962 he began renting 230 acres in order to farm for himself. Eight years later he was rid of numerous financial burdens and took the big step towards being a property owner. But it isn’t just physical work with which the Kopfers are involved. Their progress takes a lot of planning—and to do that the family uses extensive records on crop yields, soil testing, depreciation, weight gain efficiency on steers and so forth. The Robert Kopfer family of being the Outstanding Young Far- Fleetwood R 1 was honored last mers of the year for that community, month by the Kutztown Jaycees as Kopfer was chosen for the award on the basis of his past accomplishments, farm management techniques, service to the community, and future plans.
