Jan. 24. 1976 Longwood lectures planned KENNETT SQUARE - Dr John M Fogg, Jr. will present the first of the 1970 Wednesday Evening Hor ticultural Lectures at Longwood Gardens at 8:30 pm on February 0, 1976 The lectures series is an annual event at Longwood, featuring six distinguished horticulturists who speak on subjects of interest to the home gardener Dr Fogg, Director of the Arboretum of the Bames Pesticide application exams scheduled HARRISBURG - Monthly examinations for com mercial pesticide ap plicators will beging in January in York, Adams and Franklin Counties, it was announced recently by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The examinations are scheduled January 29 at the Adams County Extension Office, RD 3, lincolnway West, Gettysburg; and January 30 at the Farm Credit Building, 3301 West Market Street, York. All sessions beging at 1:00 pan. and will be strictly for the administration of exams; no instructional or educational program will be presented. Examinations will be offered in all commercial categories. Individuals may be tested in as many areas as they desire. Study materials are available and may be purchased from Penn State University as an aid in preparing persons for these examinations. According to federal and state laws, individuals who apply or supervise the ap plication of restricted use pesticdes will be required to become certified either as a private or commercial applicator. On February 11, Mr J Benjamin Williams will give his Longwood audience "The Secret to Growing Good Roses," outlining the steps to be taken for the most suc cessful planting, fertilizing, watering, spraying and pruning. Included will be Mr William's evaluation of the best modern roses for must be accomplished prior to October 21, 1976. Commercial applicators are persons engaged in the “business” of applying pesticides, whereas private applicators limit their operation to raising agricultural commodities on their own or rented property. Exterminators, ground keepers, custom crop ap plicators and public health operators would be exam ples of commercial pesticide applicators. These examination sessions are being coor dinateds by Donald Lott, Pesticde Inspector for the Department of Agriculture. Anyone who has questions or who plans to attend any of the sessions is advised to contact Lott at the Region VI Office, Box 419, Sum merdale, 17093, or their local county agent’s office. He is chairman of the Foundation Research Fund Committee of the American Rose Society and has been recognized by that society as the Outstanding Consultant Rosarian of America. The “Sogclsu Style of Japanese Flower Arranging," will be the topic discussed on February 18 by Mrs Yone Sugiyama, Executive Director of Sogctsu, USA. Sogetsu is one of the foremost Ikebana schools in Japan. Mrs. Sugiyama will demonstrate this style of design using fresh, dried and bleached plant materials and a variety of ceramic, iron and sculptural objects in her arrangements. The fourth lecture of the Longwood series on February 25, is a slide illustrated talk entitled “A Botanist m Your Grocery Store.” Dr Richard A. Howard, Director of the Arnold Arboretum of Har vard University, will take his audience through the grocery store in a most amusing way, explaining the botanical origins of many products available. Apps, newly appointed Head of Longwood’s Education Department In a slide illustrated presentation, Dr. Apps will discuss “Peren nials for Your Garden,” explaining the potential of these herbaceous plants in the landscape, and suggesting selections that will bloom throughout the growing season. The Wednesday Evening lectures will be held at 8:30 p.m. in the Ballroom off the Main Conservatory at Longwood. The con servatories will be open and lighted for one hour before and after each lecture. Admission will be by payment of the $l.OO Wed nesday admission fee to the gardens.
