Farming, Saturday. Jan. 17, 1976 jWuce market dedicated JESSUP Md. - The world’s newest wholesale produce market was officially dedicated here on January 9 when a host of state officials and food Industry people ignored freezing weather and cut the ribbon for the state's new $6 million Maryland Wholesale Produce Market. The new market, a project more than 30 years in the making, is the visible keystone element of a vast, 400-acre complex being develop"* hy Maryland Wholesale Food Center Authority at a Howard County location picked from 23 possible sites. Ultimately, the entire food complex will include some 22 distinct operations. Com mitted and completed construction at the complex already st,.nds at ap proximately $24 million. The produce market, now opened and dedicated, is the reason for the complex’s coming into reality. However, roots for a complete food products handling area were set in 1944 report submitted to Maryland Governor Herbert Guernsey PETERBOROUGH, N.H. Erdman Farms Lassie Petunia, an eleven year old Registered Guernsey cow, owned by Raymond F. & Louise A. Witmer, Penn-Del Farm, has completed an official DHIR actual production record of 14,090 pounds of milk and 669 pounds of butterfat, in 305 days two times a day milking, according to The American Guernsey Cattle Club. Other studies, capped by the 1965 GBC survey, prompted the Maryland General Assembly in 1967 to create the Maryland Wholesale Food Center Authority, which in 1968 acquired the Howard County site at the tran sportation hub of the region. Located at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and Maryland 175, it is served by a mainline railroad of the Chessie System and is less than a half mile from an interchange of Interstate 95, the new complex is only 16 minutes from Baltimore and 28 minutes from Washington BWI airport is just eight miles away. Some 29 produce firms have relocated to the new Produce Market completely occupying the 72 units of the two market buildings. Each unit has 2300 square feet of floor space, mezzaine of fices, front loading plat forms and rear docks served by rail. Firms are renting from one to six units. The authority’s offices are located at 1115, One Charles Center, in Baltimore. honored delicious flavor and golden yellow color. It could save greenhouse operators millions of dollars each year in the cost of applying and removing the whitewash that protects plants from the summer sun. “It also points the way," says Dr. K. Vedam of Penn State’s Materials Research Laboratory (MRL), "toward a coated household window that could significantly lower the country’s heating and air-conditioning bills.” Dr. Vedam, Dr. Rustam Roy, director of the MRL and Dr. L. Duda, associate professor of chemical engineering, are involved In the project, which is under the direction of Dr. John W. White, professor of floriculture. The key to the process on which they are working - a special liquid - was devised by a New York industrial firm. Invention npplieable to greenhouHeH The window Itself is made of two transparent plastic sheets which confine a clear fluid that turns milky white when it reaches a certain temperature. "It turns clear again when the temperature goes down," says Vedam, "making it useful for energy conservation in climates that undergo daily and seasonal temperature shifts." The fluid itself is something of a switch: it is a composite of two liquids which, when mixed, at room temperature or lower, are completely transparent. “When heated, however," says Vedam, “one of the liquids begins to collect in ultra-tiny droplets within the TRY A CLASSIFIED AD! ■■■■S ■■■h HMBh ■■■■s QQQQ How to make more milk from the same The “balanced bite” is one key The Schwartz Mixer Wagon is the other Cows vary greatly in their individ ual preferences for one forage over another.
