Angus breeders in 1975
racked up a 10.8 percent
Increase in the number of
A.H.I.R. production records
kept on their registered and
commerlcal cow herds
reports Uoyd D. Miller,
executive secretary of the
American Angus
Association. The increase in
fiscal 1975 totaled 10,250
weights, a 25 percent in
crease over the past two
years. This points out the
importance of accurate and
complete record keeping
programs, Miller added, and
proves that Cattlemen are
finding a need for records in
improving and mer
chandising their cattle.

75,400 weaning weights were
reported Indicating a figure
equal to 25 percent of the
total number of calves
registered by the Association
during the year. This figure
is up 8,010 from the 67,390

1974 and is a 11.9 percent

for the year.
In addition 29,967 yearling

Increase in this area. “The
continued increase in
yearling weights is
significant,” Miller added,

The top state in weights

Throughout the year, a total

The American Angus
Association started its
A.H.I.R. program in 1958
with herd classification, a
visual appraisal of animals
by official Association
classifiers. The
measure portion that in
cluded the taking of weaning
and yearling weights was
adopted by the Angus Board
of Directors in 1959. Since
that time, a total of 658,055
weaning and yearling
weights have been
processed.
Compared to a decade ago
breeders get back much
more than a yearling
summary of their weaning
and yearling weights. There
are wieght ratios, to show
how an animal ranked with
the average of his group;
breeding value ratios, to
indicate how likely an
animal will be able to pass
along valuable traits to its
offspring; plus sire progeny
and dam progeny sum
maries and cow efficiency
ratings that give valuable
help to breeders when
selecting replacements and
culling their herds. In ad
dition, breeders now receive
a maternal breeding value
