Ronald Goddard, general manager and executive vice president of Agway was in town last Mmi day to address the annual Agway members’ meeting of the Garden Spot Unit. Approximately 350 people were in attendance for the event, held at the Farm and Home Center. Goddard, who has been active with cooperatives since 1937, and has served Agway as general manager since 1969, accused some congressmen in Washington of “having forgotten where they came from.” He ex- see US. . . Main St New Holland, PA Phone 354-2214 plained that America has its roots in rural people and “a great deal of why America is strong lies in agriculture.” But rural communities aren't like they use to be, and farmers themselves com prise only five per cent of the U.S.’s population. Congressmen are listening to the masses - the other 95 per cent - and one of the things they’re taking issue with are farmer cooperatives, ac cording to Goddard. The Agway executive said his cooperative belongs to the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, which in effect tells congressmen what the true facts of cooperatives are. Their Job, and the job of every cooperative member, is to Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Nov. 22,1975 “educate” legislators, Goodard exclaimed. ‘ ‘Some people would like to change our laws,” Goddard continues, “I suggest we let them know how we feel.” In concluding his remarks, Goddard listed eight critical areas which need to be watched closely in order to put the nation’s economy on a strong set of legs. “The first thing we need,” Goddard began, “is a national energy policy - we should have had one two years ago, and we better not wait another two years before we get it.” “He stressed that such a policy be aimed towards conservation of fuels and independence from foreign oil producers, “one third of our crude oil is still being imported,” he emphasized. The second item Goddard mentioned is fiscal responsibility, in govern ment, whether it be state, national or local. The fanner cooperative leader urged all who are involved in agriculture to make their views known, lest urban citizeens take control of how agriculture runs its business. Tied in with fiscal responsibility is the fight to control inflation. Inflation can’t be controlled unless our leaders are careful in the way money is spent and created, Goddard stated. Intelligent use of our land, and making fullest use of “our greatest national resource - people” are also of uppermost importance if the high standard of liveing in the U.S. is to be maintained. Scorning the nation’s welfare system and laziness in society, Goddard was interrupted with an im mediate applause. Free enterprise - which is what America agriculture was built on. is another vital link in the chain which makes this country strong, according to Goddard. ‘‘We must assure the continuation of the free enterprise system,” he exclaimed. Maintaining a strong defense posture and always being prepared is important if the United States is to continue as a leader in the world • not as a policeman or bully, but rather to protect oue way of life and those of our friends. “Working together through cooperation” ia the final point Goddard cited, which brought him around full circle to the beginning part of his speech - fanner cooperatives. Expressing a need for better un derstanding between far mers and consumers, Goddard hoped it could be brought about through wise selection of leaders - beginning right a the Agway committee level. “I have great confidence in the United States ... great confidence in Nor theast agriculture ... great confidence in the produc tivity of- Agway members and in Agway’s ability to serve It’s members,” Goddard said. Taking on the theme of the nation’s Bicentennial celebration, Goddard left the podium with these words: “Agriculture was the basis for the past 200 years, and it will be the basis for the next 200.” Packaging Materials Be sure to wrap food carefully before freezing to prevent exposure to air and loss of moisture during freezing and storage Ex posure to air will cause changes in color and flavor and will permit delicate foods to absorb strong flavors and odors given off by other foods Suitable packaging is especially important in frost-free freezers that have a fan blowing air over the food, drawing moisture from the package 27
