Nov. 15. 1975 Dale Brandi FFA’er is Commercial By Melissa Piper HERSHEY - For a high school junior, Dale Brandt has already become a successful swine herdsman and is looking forward to working in the enterprise on a full time basis. A student and FFA Dale Brandt, Hershey Rl. has been raising swine for the past three years and enjoys farm work. A member of the Lower Dauphin FFA, Dale has been on several club committees. Although the young man, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Brandt, Hershey Rl, has developed a three way breed cross and is farrowing some 130 small pigs per year, the youth didn’t always foresee a future in that angle of far* ming. “I never really cared for raising pigs,” Dale noted, “but one day my brother asked me to show his pigs at a nearby fair and I decided that they weren’t that bad.” “In fact,” the FFA’er explained, “I kind of liked working with them and just started raisine them on my' own.” While Dale has taken swine fattening projects, the majority, of his work has Feeds with 50 grams per ton of AUREOMYCIN* require no withdrawal before slaughter. Utilizing a portion of the family's barn between Hcrshey and Elizabethtown, Dale is presently raising eight sows which farrow twice a year. While not a huge operation yet, the youth is still in the process of building up his herd for the future. Dale uses a three way cross of Hampshire, Duroc and Yorkshire breed and has a Duroc boar on the farm. “I like a three-way cross because it offers good animals,” the FFA’er realted. Crossbreds have good stamina and represent the best of the breed charac teristics.” Dale sells most of his pigs at 6-8 weeks of age as feeder pigs on a private basis. Some of his gilts are kept for replacements in his herd however.
