30—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Nov. 8, 1975 MarylandAßC-Sire Power open house attracts largecrowd The Maryland ABC-Sirc Power Open House held Oct. 16, 1975 at Frederick, Md. was a successful event. Over 700 people turned out to see the in-waiting sires, daughters of proven sires, and to meet the people who operate their cooperative. The Annual Meeting of Maryland ABC was called to order at 10 o’clock a.m. by President Schnebly. After reading of the minutes, Treasurer & General Manger of Maryland ABC, W.L. Campbell gave the financial report. He com mented on the strength of the cooperative. In a year that was financially uncertain for most businesses, Maryland ABC produced a substantial margin and is in a sound financial position. Following the meeting, Professor M McCullough, a leading nutritional specialsit from the University of Georgia, spoke on “New Concepts in Feeding Dairy Cattle.” He spoke on three major feeding aspects; intake, balancing a ration, and what you feed cows. He stated that there are many feeds on the market that will fill a cow. However, Egg voters The U.S. Department of Agriculture reminds eligible egg producers of the referendum Nov. 3-28 on the proposed nationwide research and promotion order for eggs, egg products, and spent fowl (laying hens no longer productive). Marked ballots must be received in Washington, D.C. no Later than Nov. 28. All eligible voters known to the Department have been mailed ballots and in structions. Any producer who has not received a ballot may obtain one by con tacting a county office of USDA’s Agricultural Stabilazation and Con- Ayrshires complete records In the herd of Milton M. Brubaker, Spruce Villa Farm, lititz, Pennsylvania, a five-year old registered Ayrshire cow named Ayrwen Royal Priscilla has com pleted an official milk production record of 16,560 pounds, with 683 pounds of butterfat, on twice daily milking for 305-day DHIR testing period. This record is one of many being made by an increasing number of registered Ayrshires on the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association official DHIR testing program. Priscflla’s record is 1% times the national average for all dairy cows The Ayrshire breed is noted for persistent, profitable production of nutritious, quality milk. Also in the herd are the following cows and their records - Monica Royal Anna. Age J-3; Milk 12,980; Fat 537; Tunes Nat. Average dairymen should strive to increase intake with feed that will add to production. He also stated that modem dairy rations should be formulated by a competent feed company or university because they have the facilities to do it more ac curately to insure a com pletely balanced ration. Following Prof. Mc- Cullough's very informative talk, the Maryland Dairy Shrine Club held their 12 Annual Meeting. Two dairy industry pioneers, John Conover and Wendell Ar buckle were honored. John Conover served as Extension Dairy Specialist at the University of Maryland from 1922-1944. This was during the earlier days of Extension when it was very difficult to get acceptance of new and better methods and change the attitudes of farmers. His dedication to the service of farm people gained him the wide spread respect and fond rememberance of all those who knew him. Wendell Arbuckle per formed in an outstanding manner, his teaching, research and extension reminded servation Service, or from the Director, Poultry Division, Agricultural Marketing Service, USDA, Washington, D.C. 20250. An official with the AMS Poultry Division said that flock owners in all states except Hawaii and Alaska who had, at any time bet ween June 1 and Aug. 31, 1975, more than 3,000 laying hens producing eggs for commercial use, and who are now engaged in egg production are eligible to vote. Flock owners whose output is used primarily for hatching purposes are not eligible to vote. John says - The grandpa in the Service Dept, is not going to get ahead of me. His major research involved ice cream and the for mulation of it to make it popular to the public. He also promoted and worked with other dairy products and dairy manufacturing plants. Dr. Arbuckle continues to be active, serving as Con sultant to several manufacturing firms. Portraits of these two men will be placed in the Maryland Dairy Shrine Room along with other pioneers of the dairy in dustry. Following the Dairy Shrine Meeting, Maryland Dairy Princess, Terry Leppo was introduced. She addressed the group on the benefits of milk. She said, “Milk drinkers make better lovers.” The luncheon en tertainment by the “J.J.’s”, two female fplksingers, was enjoyed by all as was the barbequed chicken dinner. Maryland ABC technician, Robert Pippin, was named Techinican of the Year at a brief awards program. He has bred cows for Maryland ABC since 1958 in the Lower LANCASTER FORD TRACTOR, INC. Other technicians recognized were Sam Glisan, Russell Teets, Lewis Dixon, Albert Draper, and Warren Thompson. Following the awards program, a parade of Sire Power bulls and daughters of Sire Power bulls was presented by J. Lloyd Ebersole, Director of Sire Development and Amon Grantham, Assistant Sire Analyst. Comments were made by satisfied owners of the daughters of A. I. Proven sires such as 9H120 MOSE, 9H121 Al, 9A076 ALBI and 9G084 DORAMOST. After a most enjoyable day, members returned home more aware of how their cooperative works and its plans for the future.
