Com
blight
studied
UNIVERSITY PARK -
Plant disease specialists at
Penn State University are
conducting research on a
disease management
program to avoid future
epidemics like Southern com
leaf blight which cost U.S.
farmers one billion dollars in
1970.
One objective is to
determine what level of
disease creates economic
losses, stated Dr. Richard R.
Nelson and Dr. John E.
Ayers, both with the College
of Agriculture at Penn State.
Working with Southern
com leaf blight as a model,
the researchers are now able
to manipulate the mount of
infection of the disease and
the rate at which is spreads.
“To develop an effective
corn blight management
program, we need to know
how long the disease has
been in a field - since a short
time infection should mean
less crop damage than
otherwise,” Nelson af
firmed.
