More than 20,000 people a year arc injured by gas or
electric ranges.
Here are the following suggestions for the purchase,
safe use, and maintenance of kitchen ranges.
Purchase -
Knobs should be difficult for children to turn on.
Controls should be located so there is no
need to reach over the burners.
Buy a range that has a signal light when the burner is on.
Use ■
Keep curtains and dishtowels away from the range.
Don’t turn your back against the range while it is on.
Don’t lean against it.
Use the proper size burner for each pot.
If you smell gas from a gas range, turn off

all controls and open a window or door.
Call the gas company immediately.
Never use flammable liquids around a gas stove.
If you have a grease fire in a pan;
turn off the burner and cover the pan with a lid.
Don’t try to carry the grease to the sink.
(Throwing baking soda on a grease fire
to smother it may splash the grease and spread the fire.
If you use a fire-extinguisher make sure
it is a dry-chemical fire-extinguisher.)
Maintenance -
Keep the pilot lights lit on a gas range.
Always check electric ranges to be
sure they are off.
Have the gas company check
immediately if you suspect a gas leak.
