Raises Swine
Ron has developed his
swine projects into a small
operation and is Just
beginning his herd of Duroc
and crossbred swine.
The youth, which uses the
facilities on his father’s and
grandfather’s farms near
Penn Manor, has six sows
and the same number of gilts
along with a boar.
Ron explained why he had
chosen the swine operation
over other fields of
production. “I guess I could
raise other livestock such as
beef, but it seems like such a
long time before there are
any returns.”
“In a swine operation
you’re at least able to get
some money fairly quickly
and then gradually add to
your herd.”

“I think that the Duroc
animals are fast growing
and look like the modem hog
that everyone is growing
for.”
“I like them and think I’ll
stay with that breed.”
Last year at the West
Lampeter Fair, Ron bought
a young gilt and raised her at
his father’s farm. This year,
the sow came back to the fair
with a litter of pigs and was
entered in the “sow with a
litter” class. The young man
seemed quite proud of the
fact that the animal had done
well enough to show again.

Farming
Ron, like many youths in
southeastern Pa., had
decided that fanning is the
career he will pursue. While
the field may seem less than
appealing to many young
men his age, Ron explained

Soil Samples
Fall months are an ideal
time to take soil samples to
determine next year’s needs
for lime, phosphorus and
potash. Poorly planned lime
and fertilizer programs often
can be blamed on the rush of
spring work when plowing
and planting suddenly
become urgent. If soil
samples are taken now,
there will be plenty of time to
order the proper fertilizers
and take advantage of early*
order discounts.
Lime, as well as
phosphorus and potash can
be applied during fall
his decision. “Without the
fanner, there would be little
to live on, he produces the
meat and food for the people
in this and other nations.”
“I feel we have a duty to do
what we can to help our
country and farming is
certainly one way to do it.”
Hopefully, it will be the
young men and women such
as Ron that will sustain our
agricultural production in
the years to come, for in
Ron’s words, “farmers have
made America what it is
today.”
