She explained that she was allowed to choose what breed she wanted and she requested a cross because "that’s what the Judges arc looking for. They arc looking for steers that are stretching out and are taller. ’ Showing a great understanding, she went on to say that there Is a disagreement over whether the crosses or regular breeds have more meat. "Some think they do and some think not," she said. “But, without the regular breeds there would be no crosses." She explained that her present crossbred has "a lot of growing to do." Crossbreds have a tendency to be big and stubborn," she said, but she follows her father s advice when training him, "We make pets of them, we curry them, rinse them and then eventually lead them. Her steer, which is eating 18-20 pounds of feed dally, "now needs to fatten up," „ „ Is it hard to sell a steer at the end of the 4-H year. 'No, says Kim. "There is always a new steer to replace it and a new challenge to look forward to." And what does she do with all the money she gets when she sells a steer? Kim explained carefully that the feed costs, the cost of the animal and other expenses all come out of the money before there is talk of profit. She said, “We get to keep any prize money from shows and any profit. But sometimes there is a profit and sometimes there is not.” She will be showing her animal at the Solanco Com munity Fair, Timonium Fair, the International Livestock Show in Harrisburg and “hopefully the Farm Show. The Farm Show is just a ball." Kim’s goal is to be a member of the first all-girl livestock judging team. She said there are four girls eligible for the junior livestock team next year, and they are going to work hard to make it. With her knowledge and enthusiasm, she will be hard to beat! In the Solanco club, Kim says, her project this year was crotcheting and she made a baby afghan. She is treasurer of the club and says she is one of the oldest members. She says, “It is fun to be an older member.” She joined the club when it was founded two years ago because “4-H is fun and it is a local community activity. The baby beef club is a county club, with a completely different group of people. Lancaster Co. worked for Che try hill Orchard*. Part of the time there wai a "quality control expert" and aiaiated in the thin* nlng of peaches. She also helped with the weighing In of cherries. This was not Patsy’s first experience in the 4-H queen contest. She had been in it twice before and had also en tered the talent contest. But this year she said, "I was only in the queen contest and I was more relaxed. I had never made the semi-final contest before." When she won, she said, “I was so surprised." Her mother said, "We were Just flabbergasted. It is so exciting." Kim Weaver, the pretty Junior queen, has been a 4-H’er for five years. Kim is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jason Weaver, Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, and has been in the Red Rose Baby Beef dub all five years and the Solanco Community Club for two years. Kim says she Joined 4-H because her brother and sisters all had been 4-H members, and she enjoyed helping them with their steers. Her father encouraged her, too, since he was a leader. Kim has three sisters: Kathy, 25; Kay, 24 and Karen 16. Her brother Ken is 28. 4-H is a most rewarding experience, Kim says, because it means getting to know people and making friends. In the finalist contest at Achievement Day Kim was asked what she would do to help others. She said her answer was, "If a friend comes to me with a problem I would CUT HEATING COST, STAY WARM DURING POWER FAILURES, with this HEATER u • Bi-metal thermostat • Cast-iron grate • Firebrick finer • Heavy metal jacket • Shipping wt, 178 lbs. • Immediately available FIRE GRATE DOUBLES FIREPLACE HEAT OUTPUT J2£ No installation 61 watt blower 2 in. tubes Shipping wt., 67 lbs.
