When hog research began at the Purina
Research Farm in 1926, hog raising was quite
different than it is today. Forty-one years ago
the average farmer weaned 5.6 pigs per Otter.
Little supplement was fed and it took about
12 bushels of com to put a hundred pounds
of gain on a pig. Time to market ranged from
seven to nine months. But who was in a
hurry? The January average of hogs sold at
Chicago in 1926 was $12.05 per cwt. - which
was a lot better than the $2.97 per cwt. they
brought in the depth of the depression in
1933! _
