"The potato situation is going to have to get better,” Noah Jr. commented. Referring to an article appearing in the Wall Street Journal recently, he observed that the 1975 crop is considerably smaller than last year’s and potato futures are rising rapidly. His observation has ap parently been correct. Within the past week, futures prices for Maine potatoes have risen by nearly a dollat per cwt. Kreider described the market as “very active.” The Wall Street Journal did indeed report “potato prices may be heading sharply higher.” This is said to be the result of the revised government crop reports which were released on August 11. Those statistics revealed much lower figures than what had been posted previously. Kreider predicts that potato growers in the South will cut back even more than they have so far because they’re finding out there’s more money in corn and soybeans than spuds. He noted that region had a bad crop this year due to un favorable weather. Specifically, the govern ment’s crop report indicated that nine percent fewer potatoes will be harvested this year as compared to last.
