—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 9. 1975 62 HARRISBURG - The first annual Keystone State Championship Pony Pulling Contest will be held Sep tember 23 at the Farm Show Building in Harrisburg during the Pennsylvania All- American Dairy Show, it was announced by Wellington D. Smith, executive director of the Farm Show Commission. Competition is limited to teams owned and driven by Pennsylvania residents. Each owner is limited to one team per class. Entries must be post marked by August 22 and must be accompanied by a $lO entry fee. The contest will be conducted under normal pony pulling regulations, similar to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show rules. All entries must have had the Coggins test for Equine Infectious Anemia. The maximum permissible height of ponies is 52 inches without shoes. Teams may arrive at the Farm Show Building after 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sep tember 22, and must be out of their stalls by noon Wed nesday, September 24. Competition will be held in three classes: lightweight teams up to 1,000 lbs.; mediumweight teams, 1,001 *to 1,300 lbs.; and heavyweight teams, 1,301 to 1,700 lbs. First place winners will receive $6O and a trophy. Other prizes are: second place, $5O; third place, $4O; fourth place, $3O; and fifth place, $2O. Exhibitors of all other teams completing the first pull will receive $l5. Health: No pony showing physical evidence of a transmissible disease will be permitted on the grounds. All owners must have a negative Coggins test (E.1.A.) report in their possession upon arrival at the Show. Negative test must have been conducted within 12 months of opening date of the show. 2. Height: Maximum of 52 inches plus the height of the shoes. 3. Weight classes: Light weight class -up to 1,000 lbs.; medium weight class -1,001 to 1,300 lbs.; Heavyweight class - 1,301 to 1,700 lbs. 4. Weighing: Ponies must be weighed with halters the day of the contest between 12:30 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. September 23, 1975. Team sters are requested to keep their team’s in their stalls until notified. All teams must weigh. 5. Teams will be permitted to weigh once only at the time called for official weighing. Teams must then enter the contest as they were weighed (with or without shoes). For the convenience of contestants a check weight will be per mitted between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the contest. 6. A Sled will be used for the contest. 7. Weight setting; Ex perience has shown that ponies reach their maximum between the fourth and sixth pulls. The judge and superintendent will consult on the weight settings. 8. Order of Pull; Team sters will pull in order of the numbers assigned by the Superintendent at weigh in. 9. Doubletrees: Each teamster may use his own doubletrees provided they are sufficiently strong and equipped with hand holds and hook. There will be no measuring of the doubletrees. 10. Harness: Breakage of the harness during the pull will constitute a trial with the distance pulled credited to the team. Hitching with TOBACCO SUCKER INHIBITOR Pony Pulling contest cross tugs is prohibited. No open bridles will be per mitted. 11. If more than three attempts to hitch arc made, it will constitute a pull. Teams must hitch within 90 seconds. 12. All teams must pull within the designated marked area of 15 feet wide. Failing to pull within this area will constitute a trial but no credit will be given for distance. 13. Distance of Pull: The Sled must be pulled the full official distance of 13'z feet for each weight setting. Partial distance will be counted only in determining the placing. 14. Trials: Each team will be allowed three trials at each weight. All teams must take all trials in the order called. None will be allowed to pass a trial and take it later. Each pass will be recorded as a trial. The chainman will designate the end of the full distance pull It will be optional with the judges whether teams arrive late be allowed to pull or not. In any case they are allowed to pull, they must qualify by taking all of the trials at the same weight as earlier arrivals. This will protect the operator and avoid un duly delaying the contest where there are a large number of entries and one or two late arrivals. 15. Helpers: Each teamster must arrange for his helper and the helper is his own employee. A maximum of one driver and helper per team are per mitted in the arena. No one is permitted ahead of doubletrees while hitching or while the pull is in progress.
