Ag engineer wins MF award
Frank W. Peikert, head of
the agricultural engineering
department at The Penn
sylvania State University,
won the Massey-Ferguson
Educational Award recently
at the summer meeting of
the American Society of
Agricultural Engineers
(ASAE) at the University of
California, Davis.
Peikert was cited for
“dedication to the spirit of
learning and teaching in the

Peikert is responsible for
general supervision of all

the agricultural engineering

department at Penn State.
His research has covered
harvesting equipment,
irrigation practices, and
materials handling equip
ment. He received national
recognition in 1953 from the
Sprinkler Irrigation Assoc,
for development work in
irrigation.
He came to Penn State as
department head in 1954. In
addition to the professional
program, he also recognized
and responded to the needs
of individuals and of industry
for the training of farm
equipment service per
sonnel. He started such a
non-degree program in 1956.
Accreditation and
development of a strong
graduate program have been
major goals and ac
complishments of Frank
Peikert at Penn State.
Assistantships for master’s
degrees have grown ap
preciably. He also upgraded
the staff and facilities in
preparation for offering the
PhD degree. That program
was approved in 1968.
Physical facilities have
tripled in size as has
equipment for graduate
research and instruction
under Peikert’s leadership.

Since 1973, Peikert has
served as senior engineering
advisor for an agricultural
development project on
Andros Island in the
Bahamas. The project in
volves clearing land, making
soil from parent limestone
rock with the use of heavy
equipment, and drilling a
series of wells to tap fresh
water.
In recent years the
agricultural engineer was
closely affiliated with the
Penn State-Agency for In
ternational Development
(AID) program in India. He
served as consultant and
advisor in developing a new
agricultural university in the
State of Maharashtra, India.
