Two brothers from the Ephrata area captured top awards in the fitting and showmanship contest held during the annual FFA Hog Show. Charles’ hog sold to the Hatfield Packing Co., Hatfield, Pa., for $1.21 per pound. Brothers Win Fitting-Showing Robert and Steven Strauss, Ephrata Rl, shared top victories in the fitting and showing competition held during the hog show. Robert placed first in the senior fitting contest and was presented an award sponsored by the Pennfield Corp., Rohrerstown. Robert’s brother, Steve was selected as the top showman in the senior division and was presented an award from Gehman Feed Mill, Denver. The youths, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strauss, Durlach Rd., Ephrata Rl, have been raising hogs as FFA projects for the past few years on their small farm. Lloyd Hoover, Leola, exhibited the champion carcass class hog which was entered with five other hogs in that class. The judging of the carcass class took place at A. B. Martin Co., Lan caster. Cliff Charles exhibited the reserve champion in the carcass competition. Jim Kerr, president of the ag teacher’s association presented the award. Nelson Messner, New Holland, was presented with a trophy also sponsored by the ag teachers for exhibiting the best pen of ten hogs. John Zimmerman placed second in the contest.
