Farm accident survey begun Farming is one of our most dangerous occupations. It is hard to measure the human misery and economic loss that farm families bear as a result of disabling injuries alone. Farming, un fortunately, is also responsible for a loss of dozens of lives each season in Pennsylvania farm ac cident tragedies. Trained in terviewers will destroy their records as soon as they can assemble their data and give each case a number,” says Beppler. The University will* not have names, and no one will have access to names of participating families except the trained interviewer during the beginning part of the survey. Interviewers will make an initial contact with farm families in early September of this year. At that time information concerning the size and type of the farm, the size of the family and amount of hired help, the experience and educational level of farm workers v the nature of equipment used on the farm, and general in formation on the health of farm residents will be ob tained. Farm families will subsequently be contacted in PENNFIELD CORPORATION Lancaster, Pa STEVENS FEED MILL, INC. Stevens, Pa January, April, July, and September of 1976. If an accident occurs during that time, the interviewer will ask for information on the ages of family members injured, where and how the accident happened, taciors involved, seriousness of injuries, time lost from work, amount of hospital and doctor bills, and other such data. Again, the researchers emphasize that all such data will be handled with com plete confidentiality. What can be done with such information and data after it is compiled? It has many uses, explains Bep pler. Among these are: to learn frequency, severity, types, causes, time, and places of accidental injuries among farm families; and to stimulate interest in the development of a long-range program for safety education on a state-wide basis.
