—Lancaster Farming, Saturday. July 19,”1^75 68 Lancaster 4-Her’s share experiences on exchange trip On June 28th, at 6:00 In the morning, fifty 4-H members, chaperones, and a bus driver, stumbled sleepily to the Farm and Home Center to be off to Colorado. This was to be first of four days on the road followed by five days with host families in Colorado then back on the road for four more days coming home. That first day we traveled through West Virginia and Ohio and finally made our night stop in Rich mond, Indiana. We stayed overnight with 4-H families from Wayne County. The next day we continued through the rest of Indiana, Illinois and made our second night stop in Marshall, Missouri. We were ac comodated by 4-Hers from Selina County at their Fairgrounds. We had a night of swimming, dancing, and camping out. By this time it was Monday and we were getting closer to our destination. We were through Missouri and practically across Kansas before we made our third NEED CASH? Park your equipment on our lot. The next morning we started out bright and early to reach our destination in Durango, Colorado by that evening. But we had a surprise waiting for us. Starting up and over the mountains we were beginning to have trouble with our bus. We were told by Terry, our bus driver, that our busses weren’t built to take the strain with the intense heat crossing over the mountains. So we made an unexpected stay at a Ramada Inn for the night. We had backtracked to Pueblo, Colorado for the night and had informed the extension office in Durango of our whereabouts. We left the following morning at 4:30 m.s.t. so we could travel over the mountains in the cool of the morning. We stopped for about fifteen minutes so all of us could enjoy a refreshing snow ball battle at the top of the mountains. We traveled through the Wolf Creek Pass and down to Pagosa Springs where we dropped off some of the 4-H members to their host families. We ihen traveled on to Durango where the rest of us were to be distributed over five counties. Some of the places we were distributed were Durango itself, Cortez, Dove Creek, Yellow-Jacket, and Ignacio. One 4-H member was placed in Utah and another was about a three hour drive from where we left her in Durango. Some of us were to see each other over the next five days but mostly we were entertained by our 4-H host. Places of interest that most of us went to see were the old Indian ruins of Mesa Verde, Ute Mountain which looked exactly like a sleeping Ute Indian and Chimney Rock. For entertainment most of our host families took us to the -D (bar D) Ranch for a western type family style dinner with country western music afterward. Most of us were staying on ranches that consisted of anywhere from 15 to 5000 acres. So we all had plenty to do. The day we left which was Sunday was a sad reunion. There was a large get together because that morning we traveled the Silvertom Narrow Gauge Railroad which wound in and about the mountains from Durango to Silverton. The ride lasted about six hours. When we returned we had our last get together with our host families at a picnic that ERTH-RITE SOU CONDITIONER MAXICROP LIQUID PLANT FEEDING FEED-RITE Vitamin & Mineral for livestock and poultry 200 K& RANCH, INC. RDl.Gap.Pa 17527 Phone 717-442-4171 was given for us. We were going to travel throughout the night and when it was time to leave some tears were shed. So we were on our way back home. Going back through Kansas we stayed just outside of Dodge City and spent the day exploring the old town and staying to see the show that evening. The next three days were spent traveling back across the same states and staying in motels. It was a bunch of tired 4-Hers and chaperones along with our bus driver that finally descended the steps at the Farm and Home Center on Friday, July 11th at 5:15 p.m. Everyone asked each other if the trip was worth it and all the replies were that it was one of the best exchange trips Lan caster County 4-H has ever had. Asked if they would ever want to go again, they replied they would jump at the chance. So next year the Colorado 4-Hers will be returning to Pennsylvania to be hosted by most of the kids that traveled out there this past two weeks.
