S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported. USDA animal health of ficials warned hog farmers throughout the nation but particularly in the southwest —to remain alert for signs of this costly and often fatal virus disease, which has the potential for rapid spread. 13,544 555 15,225 18,251 571 563 16,956 14,284 12,869 610 661 570 15,010 625 15,686 552 1ff,154 15,026 623 576 Hog cholera has been the object of a highly successful state-federal eradication campaign that began in late 1962. The current outbreak was found in a herd of about 170 hogs owned by Louis Woodford and located near Hereford, Tex., in Deaf Smith county, according to officials of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS }. The diagnosis was confirmed at the APHIS Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, la., from tests on specimens which had been flown by courier from both the hog farm and from the Texas A&M University veterinary diagnostic laboratory, where earlier tests had indicated the presence of hog cholera. The affected swine herd has been placed under quarantine by the Texas Animal Health Commission. Additional state and federal quarantines will be placed as necessary to control the disease. Contact with in fected or exposed swine is one of the primary ways hog cholera is spread to healthy hogs. A state-federal task force is being established in the area to eliminate the disease and investigate the source of the outbreak and any possible spread. The infected herd will be destroyed and the owner will be in demnified for the loss of his hogs. Signs of hog cholera in clude loss of appetite, fever and hogs that are just “sick all over.” Other signs in clude abortions and ab normal death losses among young pigs. Hog farmers are urged to contact their local veterinarian or state or federal animal health of ficials immediately if they suspect hog cholera.
