Cooperation between the State experiment stations and the USDA has been mandated by every agricultural appropriation act since 1887. Congressional committees are alert for evidences of wasteful duplication of research. The experience of a cen tury is that successful agricultural research and education is a long-time proposition. Although there are immediate benefits, major innovations require a long period for development. Even after a new practice is perfected, changing cir cumstances may postpone adoption. Delayed Impact. For example, the breakthroughs in genetics and chemistry in the first third of this century did not begin to appear in farming until the mid-1930'5. The full impact was delayed by the Depression and the outbreak of World War 11. The rate of adoption did not reach flood tide until the 1950's and 1960'5. Much of the backlog of reserve technology has now been put to use. This is reason for concern because of rising costs of research, ■ PUBLIC AUCTION COMPLETE DISPERSAL SALE OF FARM MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT Havini sold the Todd Farms and to settle the ROSS S. The cost of maintaining one scientist for, 1 year rose from $37,000 in 1066 to $56,000 in 1973. Ap propriations for research were cut back in 1072-75. However, the U.S. has large staffs of highly trained, well-equipped agricultural researchers, com municators, and educators. This is a benefit of in-- calculable value as we enter a period in which massive problems of environmental pollution, energy con servation, and the pressure of population on the food supply move to the forefront. 6 P.M. Demand for eggs likely to strengthen Demand for eggs in the first half of calendar 1076 will likely be a little stronger than a year earlier because of Increasing real disposable consumer incomes, higher employment, and smaller supplies of pork and turkeys. Eggs will face more com petition, however, from beef and broilers. These views are contained In the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) publication “Egg Marketing Facts - First Half 1976,” to be released about July 7. As stated in the report, other prospects concerning the egg industry during the first half of 1976 include: Costs of producing eggs will hinge largely on the outcome of this year’s com and soybean crops.
