Oil import
fees opposed
Syracuse, N.Y.
President Gerald R. Ford
has been cautioned by
Eastern Milk Producers
Cooperative that crude oil
import fees could result in a
rude awakening for our
nation’s food consumers.
The cooperative, based in
Syracuse, N.Y. proposed on
June 30, that milk producers
be exempt from the import
fee of 2 dollars per barrel on
crude oil. Eastern also asked
that these farmers be
exempt from base fees of 60
to 63 cents on finished
product.
According to John C. York,
Eastern’s General Manager,
the current squeeze between
prices paid and prices
received is impoverishing
dairy farmers, and causing
many to abandon farming to
the ultimate detriment of
consumers of milk and diary
products.
York added, “Milk
producers are large users of
oil and oil products in their
operations. Their exemption
from these fees would afford
them some measure of
relief.”
In his letter to Ford, York,
on behalf of Eastern’s 8,000
members, -urged that the
President’s Proclamation
relating to imposition of
import fees on crude oil and
finished product be amended
for the purpose of carrying
out Eastern’s proposal. In
instances where fees are not
paid directly by farmers,
York continued, provisions
would need to be made for
reimbursement.
The Co-op leader con
cluded by stating the effect
of the recommended
exemption, with adoption of
other federal government
measures, would hopefully
allow farmers to better cope
with the present cost-price
squeeze and continue in
business.
Unless, dairymen could, in
some way recover their
inflated costs caused by
higher oil prices, dairy
fanning could deteriorate to
the point of no return, and
consumer prices would zoom
out-of-sight, said York.
