A new Maryland law,
which becomea effective
July 1, revUea existing laws
to provide for the licensing of
livestock dealers, Including
those who deal in horses and
other equines, it was an
nounced today by the
Maryland Department of
Agriculture.
Licensed livestock dealers
and market operators are,
by the provisions of Chapter
171 of the 1975 laws required
to maintain records covering
all livestock, including
equines, received and
disposed of by the dealer or
his agent. Records are to be
maintained for three years,
and must show dates of
receipt and sale and the
name and address of the
consignor.
The law defines a livestock
dealer as any person who
engages in the business of
selling, buying, exchanging
or transferring livestock at
any place and at any time.
Livestock, equines in
cluded, must be identified in
one of several ways, in
cluding a metal ear tag,
tattoo number, purebred
name and registery number,
or by such methods
established by the Maryland
Growing Degree Days
For the week ending June
30, 1975, the average tem
perature in Lancaster was 74
degrees. Days for crops at 40
degrees numbered 1914 and
for 50 degrees numbered
1132. Rainfall for the week
was 2.38 inches and from
April 1 was 15.55 inches.

sale of these animals
thereafter. Likewise, far
mers who sell any breeding,
surplus or unprofitable
animals owned by him are
exempt.
The law also exempts the
private sale, exchange or
transportation of equines.
