D. Walker, president of the seed firm. Major investments are being made at existing processing plants in Rock ville, Indiana, and at Traer, lowa. A completely new structure is under con struction at Ashton, Illinois. The Ashton plant is being built at a cost of $4.9 million. It is located on a 40 acre site in the heart of a major Funk seed production area in northern Illinois. When completed, the Ashton plant will contain sizing and drying equip ment, and controlled at mosphere bulk and bag storage. It will have a capacity of 200,000 seed units and is designed to be in creased in size as sales in the area increase. The Ashton plant will require 10 to 15 permanent employees from the Ashton area, as well as several additional temporary em ployees during peak seasonal operations of the plant. Size of the Rockville plant is being increased by 50 percent at a cost of $2.4 million. When finished, the plant will house 280,000 units of seed. Drying, shelling, sizing, cleaning and storage facilities are being ex panded. Upon completion, five new employees will be added. The Traer facility is also being enlarged 50 percent. Costs of additional equip ment for drying, shelling and cleaning will be $1.4 million. Last year a controlled atmosphere warehouse was completed at Traer. When finished, the Traer plant will have a 250,000 unit capacity. Five people will be added to the production staff. Construction was begun in May at the three plants. Walker expects work to be sufficiently completed by mid-August so that seed can be processed this season. "hyperimmunized swine." The action will bring meat inspection regulations into accord with other USDA regulations concerning hog cholera. According to officials of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) a cooperative state-federal campaign to wipe out hog cholera began in late 1962. Before then, the disease was known as the nation’s number one hog killer. By mid-1969 the campaign to eradicate hog cholera already had made sub stantial progress. For that reason, and because hog cholera vaccine could mask infection or even cause outbreaks, use of the vaccine was stopped at that time by halting interstate shipments except for export. By late 1971, the decision came to halt production of all hog cholera vaccine and serum in this country. Surveillance for hog cholera is continuing, said APHIS officials, to make sure that all traces of hog cholera virus have been eliminated from the nation’s swine population. The disease is still found in many major expansion programs, $1.5 million is being spent at other compa'ny facilities, says president Walker.
