Varieties and

and forage crops - plus
demonstrations of weed
control and no-tillage
methods - will be featured
July 1 during a field day for
Pennsylvania farmers at the
Rock Springs Agronomy
Research Farm of Penn
State, 3 miles west of Pine
Grove Mills on Route 45.
The July 1 crop demon
strations will get underway
at 9:30 a.m. Farmers
wanting to take in all events
should plan to arrive by 9:30
a.m. and spend the day at the
farm, suggests Lynn D.
Hoffman, field day chairman
and superintendent of the
Agronomy Research Farm.
He says that items to be
shown will be handled in
greater depth than at
previous field days.
Lunch will be available at
the farm at noon. A brief
program from 1:00 to 1:30
p.m. will feature James L.
Starling, head of the
Department of Agronomy,
and James M. Beattie, Dean
of the College of Agriculture.
Among the new forage
legumes on display will be
Arc, WL3II, Saranac-AR,
and Spredor alfalfa, Leo and

Lathco flat pea. These
forage varieties are being
tested for productivity,
persistence, and forage
quality.
Arc, Saranac, and WL3II
are alfalfa varieties
carrying resistance to
Southern anthracnose, a
relatively new alfalfa
disease. Leo birdsfoot trefoil
is a new variety from
Canada and Dawn is from
Missouri, whereas Kenstar
is a new red clover variety
from Kentucky. Lathco flat
pea is a new legume par
ticularly adapted for ground
cover to control soil erosion.
Similarly, red clover plots
harvested at different
periods in the late summer
and early fall during the
seeding year will be seen.
These plots demonstrate that
hay yields can be increased
by over 1 ton per acre by
using a pre-emergence
chemical and early August
clipping during the seeding
year.
A new warm season
perennial grass commonly
grown in U.S. western range
country, switchgrass, will be
seen in comparison with
such cool season grasses as
timothy, orchardgrass,
smooth bromegrass, and tall
fescue.
