The Stewarts, who reside in Delta, Pa., operate a 450 acre farming operation, raising about 230 Holstelns including 128 milking cows. The young dairy farmer also raises about 200 acres of com, 60 acres of barley, 70 acres of alfalfa, and 20 acres of sudax. The Stewarts were nominated to participate in this year’s program by Roy A. Weaner, Jr., Inter-State director. Stewart is president of his Inter-State local, director of the York Co. Holstein Assn., vice president of the Young Farmers Assn. He is also a member of his township planning commission. Inter-State’s second place winners, Mr. and Mrs. Geary E. Shade, will also attend the NMPF annual meeting. Shade, who graduated with honors from The Penn sylvania State University in 1963, operates a 234 acre dairy farm with his wife, Judy, near Alexandria, Pa. They presently have about 40 milking cows with an ad ditional 13 head of young stock and six bulls which they sell as studs. In college he was a member of the Penn State Dairy Judging Team, and he has consigned cows to the Pa. All-American Sale. In 1973 he was selected Out standing Young Farmer by his local Jaycee chapter and went on to place third in state competition. Placing third in the competition was Mr. and Mrs. John E. John and his wife, Jane, will at tend the American Institute of Cooperation conference at Michigan State University, Lansing, Michigan. The Barleys have a Holstein herd which includes 312 milking cows and 425 head of young stock. They also raise 550 acres of com and 150 acres of alfalfa in addition to pasture land and barley which they double crop. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Assn., Dairy Shrine Club, and the Holstein-Friesian Assn. A Martinsburg, Pa., dairy family, Dale W. Hoover and his wife, Susan, placed fourth in the competition. They maintain a herd of 70 dairy cows on a 172 acre farm. He is a member of the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Co., charter member of Martinsburg Jaycees, and past president of the Swinging Squares Square Dance group. As a youth he was a member of the Livestock and Dairy 4-H Clubs where he held several offices. He was also named Regional Star Farmer and received the national FFA Dairy award. He is a member and former vice president of Blair Co. Holstein Club. Mr. and Mrs. Glen R. Cauffman, Millerstown, Pa., placed fifth in the com petition. Cauffman and his wife, Faye, operate a 1,150 acre farm in Perry Co. His herd includes 65 milk cows and about 70 head of young stock. He is president of the FHA Advisory Committee of Perry Co., and was on the Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation Service -H (S> 64.99 ° Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 28,1975 Young Cooperator Committee. He is a 1969 graduate of The Penn sylvania State University. The Judging was based on a detailed application, an on farm inspection, personal interview at the two-day meeting, and participation in discussions during the program. The 17 contestants were interviewed and judged by Wilbur Seipt, Lansdale, Pa., former president of Inter-State; Ogden C. Bacon, dairy sanitarian, Pa. Dept, of Agriculture; and Jerry Webb, Extension service, University of Delaware. The highlight of the program and the presen tation of awards followed a speech by David A. Stroud, president, National Livestock & Meat Board, Chicago, whose talk was entitled, “What Are You Doing in My Board Room?” ot “Consumerism - A New Turn.” Amos Rudderow, Moorestown, NJ, is chair man of the Young Cooperator Consultant Committee of which last week’s top five winners will become a member.
