School is out, the children
are home and we must set up
a new schedule of who does
what and when. It will take a
few days to assign respon
sibilities but I’m certainly
looking forward to help with
strawberry picking.
Judy has a summer job
with a Lancaster Resort
hotel and works six days a
week preparing food. So I’ve
lost my one big helper. I’m
sure Cindy will try to fill her
shoes and prepare our meals
as she prefers this work to
weeding the garden.
Last month a big bus drove
down our long lane, stopped
and out poured 78 kin
dergartners. The first thing
this lively, chattering group
saw was three calves tied in
a nearby field for them to
pet. Some of them quickly
ran to the meadow fence to
get a closer look at the cow

the calves belonged to her.
(We did have twin heifer
calves the other day.)
Allen gave small groups a
tour of the milking parlor
and let them climb the
ladder to peer into the 1000
gallon tank. Some inspected
a nest of five kittens while
others went to watch our pet
rabbits. As we have several
4-H pigs, they asked what the
different breeds were in the
pen andjound out how an
electric fence operates.
They looked at the garden
and thought beans were
growing on the pea fences.
Some mothers asked what
those low plants with white
blossoms were in the long
rows. They didn’t recognize
strawberries nor blueberry
bushes. When they told me
this was a very educational
tour for the children I felt
like adding and also for the
parents but I didn’t.
The Lehigh Dairy Calf
Club had their monthly
meeting recently at the
Farm Credit Office in
Fogelsville. The corrected
project books were returned
to the members.
Speakers for the evening
were Mr. Kauffman and Mr.
O’Brian from Agway who
discussed different types of
livestock buildings.
The next meeting will be
June 17 at 8:00 p.m. at Ralph
Urmy’s farm. There will be a
demonstration by Daryl
Urmy on fitting.
