and the range feeders of the
Midwest.

Down
Pennsylvania layers
produced 272 million eggs
during April, 5 percent less
than the previous month and
10 percent less than a year
earlier, according to the
Crop Reporting Service.
The April average of 13.4
million layers was down 2
percent from the previous
month and down 11 percent
from a year earlier.
Egg production per 100
layers during April totaled
2,031 eggs, down 3 percent
from the previous month but
up 1 percent from a year
earlier.
The nation’s laying flocks
produced 5,271 million eggs
during April, 6 percent less
than a year earlier. Layers
on hand during April
averaged 275 million, down 5
percent from a year earlier.
The average rate of lay
during the month was down 1
percent from a year earlier.
Corn planting in the
commonwealth made the
most rapid progress of the
season in the week ending
May 19, because of fairly
clear weather, according to
the Pennsylvania Crop
Reporting Service. Corn
planting is 41 percent
complete in the state, which
is on par with 1974. By area,
planting is 34 percent in
northern, 46 percent in
central, and 42 percent
complete in the southern
counties.
