Heritage Festival
The plana for W. Virginia’s
4th annual Mountain
Heritage Arts and Crafts
Festival to be held June 6,7,
8 on the grounds of the
Harpers Perry Caverns, are
about completed. Careful
consideration has been given
to the number of artists and
their degree of excellence in
their chosen craft.
In order to give the visitor
an unhurried opportunity to
visit and revisit each craft
smen, no more than 126 have
been selected. They will
demonstrate their skills at
black-smithing, quilting
pottery, glassblowing, tin
smithing, Jewelry making
and many more time
honored crafts.
The event has been
planned to delight all five
senses. The aightc and
sounda of craftsmen at
work; performing muaiciana
strolling the beautiful cavern
grounds and on atage in the
natural ampitheatre; the
smell and taate of home
baked goodies, fried chicken,
baked beans, country ham,
apple butter steaming in
large iron kettles. Feel cool
clay as you try to form a pot,
pick up a needle to put a few
stiches in a quilt, or try your
hand at spinning, weaving,
and lace making in the ap
prenticeship tent.
The visitor will park free
within in easy walking
distance of the festival and
be able to wander over the
lovely rolling hills among the
craft tents enjoying the
sights, sounds and smell of a

The entertainment in the
natural ampitheatre haa
been planned to Include the
beautiful sounds of old time
instruments such as fiddles,
dulcimers, and banjos. Well
known musicians who know
and interpret folk music
such as Helen Schnare,
President of Washington
Folklore society, along with
award winning Reed Martin
and Ralph Lee Smith with
their banjos, dulcimers, and
harmonica will perform
traditional mountain music.
Madeline MacNeii, folk
singer, will sing traditional
and original Shenandoah
valley music.
The Southern Sounds of
Grass from Hagerstown
known for gospel and
bluegrass music along with
Herb Smoke & Company’s
banjo and guitar music-of
course, the ever popular
Russell Fluharty with his
dulcimer and Dave Milef
sky’s folk singer and player
New Holland
Movie Gets
Film Award
Agri-Newsreel 1975 a film
produced by Sperry New
Holland has been selected to
receive the Golden Eagle
Award from the Council on
International Non-theatrical
Events (CINE).
The film was written and
directed by Donald L.
Collins. Sperry New Holland
press relations supervisor.
Photography was by Aldin
Brown, senior photographer
and Lee Weaver, both of
Sperry New Holland’s audio
visual staff.
Covered in this color film
are research on large
turkeys, a farm-in-the-zoo in
Chicago plastic hay used in
research at the University of
Vermont. Also harvesting
Irish moss from the sea in
eastern Canada, the use of
giant round bay bales and a
large potato operation in
California.

of eight old time Instruments
will also be there.
Music and folk dancing
will be intermingled on the
stage. Once more the 4-H
Dancers will perform and
this year they not only will
demonstrate but will have
one half hour teaching
sessions to share with the
visitors some of the fun on
being on stage.
This festival is for you-the
visitor. We’re not too big and
our* past successful! years
have made it possible to plan
the extra events for you to
enjoy. Come out to West Va.
Try your hand at a craft in
the apprenticeship tent; let
the 4-H Dancers teach you
the happy folk dances. You’ll
find a big W. Va. welcome
and lots of fun for all.
Special coaches have been
added to the Amtrack train
on Saturday & Sunday and
free bus service from the
train station to the festival
grounds and back.
