It is believed to be the first to encompass "soft scien ces" such as economics, management, trade and marketing, government, national and international events, and other con temporary and historical topics. Other systems generally deal with "hard sciences" such as medicine and chemistry. The data bank is available in NAL's Social Sciences Reading Room - Room 1052, South Bldg., USDA, 14th and Independence Ave., S.W., Washington, D.C. NAL has contracted to use the system for May and June at a cost of $3,950. This provides four hours of computer time a month. NAL officials said this may suggest a small amount of time but actually will enable reception of vast amounts of information, since tran smittal time is a matter of seconds for “properly framed” questions and answers. A trained operator is on hand to frame questions for immediate responses. Questions and answers are in plain English, not com puter talk, NAL notes. The system provides what is labeled a “true” information retrieval capability in that it provides abstract responses o! up to 50 words, including bibliographic citations. Most other types of systems provide only citations. Those using the system include speech writers, congressional liaison workers, managerial per sons, economists, and others *******^**************** SUMMER SCHEDULE Advance tickets for all shows *3.00 Children 12 and under FREE! NAL says they save a great amount of time that otherwise would be spent with individual indexes, reference files, and media clippings. Other D.C. outlets besides USDA for the system include two in Congress and one at the D.C. public library. Other outlets are mostly in northeast states. Primary sources of data for the bank are the daily and Sunday editions of the New York Times since 1969. Other sources include more than 60 economic, political, and social science journals. NAL said the system’s data grows at a rate of about 20,000 items per month. Each item is indexed and ab stracted by subject - in formation specialists. When an operator receives a question for the system, the question is fed into the equipment on a typewriter keyboard and appears on a television - like screen. Moments later the answer appears, via telephone line from New York City, and copies may be made of the answer for reproduction on paper.
