—Uncarter Farming, Saturday. May 17. 1975 14 Tractor Pullers Compete In Pair of Local Meets The tractor pulling season in Lancaster County got underway laat week with a pair of events at two dif ferent location*. A ‘‘Just-for fun*’ pull waa held Saturday afternoon at Galen Spickler'a in Elizabethtown. Spickler owns a trucking firm in Elizabethtown is also a Golden Harvest seed dealer, and is a familiar figure on tractor pulling tracks throughout Penn sylvania. No entry fees were charged and no prizes were awarded at the pull. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the Southeast chapter of the Pennsylvania Tractor Pullers Association (PTPA) staged a PTPA sanctioned pull where drivers competed for money, trophies and points. At the end of the pulling season, the drivers with the most points in each class of competition will be declared state champions. Tractors compete in both weight and type classes. Usual type classifications, and the only ones officially recognized in PTPA rules, include stock tractors, super stocks and modifieds. Stock machines are tractors pretty much as they come out of the field or the dealer’s showroom. Super stocks are souped up stock tractors with turbochargers and other attachments and engine modifications to increase the horsepower. Modified tractors don’t much resemble the machines you see plowing fields. These noisy powerhouses start out with regular tractor chassis, but they have over-sized tires and exotic engines or even two engines. The tractor that won the 7000-lb. modified competitions at both Elizabethtown and Kinzers, for example, is a Cockshutt 40 chassis powered by not one but two 440-cubic-inch Dodge engines. New Holland RDI Les Houck. Kinzers. piloted his the PTPA sanctioned tractor pull in machine to victory twice last Kinzers, and the open tractor pull on weekend by winning 7000-lb.
