J I Case Company and
Daimler-Benz have an
nounced a Joint venture to
market the Unimog in North
America. A multi-purpose
diesel-powered tractor, the
Unimog is built by Daimler-
Benz, the West German
manufacturer of Mercedes-
Benz passenger cars,
commercial vehicles and
diesel engines.
Unimog comes fron the
German “Univeral-Motoren-
Geraet,” which means “all
purpose engine implement.”
According to Daimler-Benz
officials, the Unimog is
“part goat, part locomotive
and part tractor. It can
climb mountains, clear
snow, plant trees, plow
fields, pull trains and mine
underground.”
While new to the North
American market, the
Unimog is a familiar site on
European farm fields, where
the unit has been in uses for
many years.
The 94-horsepower, four
wheel-drive vehicle is noted
for off-road mobility.
Utilizing an assortment of
attachments, it can be used
in a variety of applications.
Case will offer such at
tachments as backhoes,
loaders, excavators,
mowers, snow blowers,
brooms, plows and dozers.
The Unimog has four
large, equal-size, low-

pressure tires (12.5-20);
four-wheel drive; dif
ferential locks on both axles,
and a fully synchronized,
eight-speed transmission as
standard equipment. The
six-cylinder diesel engine in
the Unimog is the same as
that used in Mercedes-Benz
trucks sold in the U.S. The
Unimog has three power
take-off shafts and a
hydraulic system for lifting
or applying pressure to
implements.
The unit can be equipped
with an optional tran
smission, giving 20 forward
and eight reverse speeds
that will drop operating
speed to as low as four feet
per minute for such jobs as
crop planting and trench
digging,The very
maneuverabile vehicle has a
compact design (93.7 inch
wheelbase) and short tur
ning radius (17.7 feet).
Foldable tops or com
pletely enclosed steel cabs
provide all-weather
protection for driver and
passenger. Heating,
defrosting and ventilating
systems are standard
equipment.
