s# Lancaster Farming. Saturday, April 26. 1975 Maryland Researchers Warn of Soybean Throughout much of the Southeast, soybean cyst nematodes are regarded as a major barrier to 50-bushel per-acre yield goals for soybean growers. And the tiny soil-dwelling eelworm came in for considerable attention last month during the second annual Southern Soybean Disease Workers Council, held March 19-21 in Atlanta, Ga. Although it had spread as far north as Virginia by 1972, the nematode has not yet been found in the Old Line State, according to Dr. Leslie 0. Weaver, Extension plant pathologist at the University of Maryland in College Park. But it has been reported on the lower end of the Delmarva peninsula. He noted that both plant pathologists at the University and officials of the state Department of Agriculture’s division of plant industries in Annapolis have been concerned about the cyst nematode moving into Maryland - particularly since the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) terminated the federal quarantine on infested states some 2M> years ago. RDI, Breinigsville, PA 18031 Phone; 215-285-4616 Pest Originating in Manchuria, the soybean cyst nematode was first found In the U.S. in 1954 in New Hanover county, North Carolina, Dr. Weaver reported. By 1972 it had reached serious levels of infestation in Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. It is also now widely known in most other southeastern states, in cluding Alabama and Georgia. Nematodes attack the roots of soybeans, snap beans and other legume crops, the University of Maryland Extension specialist noted. Damaged plants are stunted and yellow. Tiny white to brown, lemon-shaped cysts are often seen clinging to the roots of infected plants when they are carefully dug. These cysts are filled with eggs and are easily spread by surface water or in soil clinging to farm equipment, human shoes, or animal feet, as well as in contaminants on seed. The greater the number of cysts, the greater the chance Public Sales Register ***»»«#•••••••••••••••• ••• • • • • • FRI. AUG. 8- 6 p,m. Dr. Weaver warned that nematodes pose not only a major threat to soybean growers in Maryland and the Delmarva peninsula, but they could have a serious economic impact on in terstate movement of nur sery stock, strawberry plants and other transplants from the Old Line State. He advised growers to make certain that all soybean seed from infested states has been certified for freedom from the cyst nematode by the state department of agriculture at the point of origin.
