If clinging lint is a persistent tag-along on freshly laundered clothes, you may need to re-check a few steps in your laundering procedures to determine the cause. There are five major reasons that lint clings to clothes: improper sorting of laundry, insufficient use of detergent, insufficient amount of water, overloading of washer and dryer and overdrying. The first remedial step is to check the lint filters. To perform at peak efficiency, filters should be cleaned after each wash and dry load. Next look at sorting procedures. Do you separate the lint “givers”, such as towels and flannel pajamas from the lint “attractors”, such as linens, corduroys, dark cottons, man-made fabrics and permanent press garments? By washing the loads separately there is less chance of lint transfer. Very heavy linters, such as chenille bedspreads, are best laundered alone. Turning lint holders inside out may help, too. Detergents act to increase the wetting of fabric sur faces. If too little detergent is used, the wetting action is reduced and lint adheres more readily. Use the amount of detergent suggested on the detergent package for your type of machine, water hardness, load size and degree of soil. Loading too many clothes into the washer inhibits the free movement of the clothes and the flushing away of the lint from fabric surfaces. Check the washer Instruction booklet to determine recommended load size and water level. Man-made fabrics that have been overdired magnetically draw lint due to static buildup. Correct timing and use of a fabric softener help to eliminate the problem. Finally, there are per manent press and certain man-made fibers such as polyesters and acrylics, that have a tendency to pill. Pilling (formation of little balls on the surface) is caused by abrasion from normal wear that is characteristic of these fabrics. Lint adheres to the pilled surfaces, and it is extremely difficult to I remove. It is best to brush the items carefully with a stiff bristled brush, or use an electric shaver on the pills.
