chicks in the Commonwealth
during the week ending April
23, 1975 were 1,546,000. The
placements were 9 percent
above the corresponding
week a year earlier, and 32
percent above the previous
week. Average placements
during the past 10 weeks
were 3 percent above a year
earlier.
Settings for broiler chicks
were 2,142,000 - 16 percent
above the previous week and
approximately the same as

Estimates of acreages
planted by farmers for most
crops and the resulting acres
for harvest in 1975 will be
released in late June rather
than July as in previous
years, the U.S. Department
of Agriculture’s Statistical
Reporting Service (SRS)
announced this week.
SRS stated the change is
being made to provide
agricultural data users with
acreage information sooner
than in the past to aid them
with marketing, policy,
program, and other
decisions associated with the
current marketing season.
The planted acreage and
acres for harvest estimates
to be released at 3.00 p.m.,
EDT, June 30, will be based

cover only those crops for
which July 1 production
forecasts are made, in
cluding corn, wheat, barley,
oats, rye, summer potatoes,
flue-cured tobacco and
selected fruits and nuts. A
July 1 corn production
forecast is being issued for
the first time since 1970.
