Sewer Assessments Another pertinent problem which Brandt discussed at the meeting was the frontage assessment for sewers that were concerning many farmers near the suburban areas. “Farmers shouldn’t be required to underwrite sewers for towns,” Brandt commented. “Too often farmers have been asked to pay for sewers that they won’t even hook on to.” Brandt explained that the Ag Committee is currently looking into the situation and has offered suggestions to the effect that farmers on whose land sewers will be passing, should be allowed to pay only a certain fee which could be reassessed if he decided to hook on the sewer. The licensing of pesticide applicators was another topic which Brandt discussed. The Lancaster County legislator agreed that the licensing would certainly make changes necessary for the individual farmers but that the ecology minded consumer had the pnTZ ■ BARN CLEANER conditions See your PATZ Dealer today. Brandt reassured the farmers that most of the stiff investigation would be going toward the actual production and dealerships where farmers would be submitting their plans for pesticide use. PFA Helpful Brandt praised the Penn sylvania Farmers Association stating that it has done a great deal of good in Harrisburg. “Because of the work the PFA has done,” Brandt commented, “people are beginning to realize that farmers are an important part of our economy.” “In fact these days it seems like there are more problems in a quart of milk than in a pint of whiskey,” Brandt admitted. The legislator went on to explain that the Ag Com mittee is hopeful that within the future an Ag Advisory Council can be set up. “We hope to draw people from the General Assembly, fanning, agribusiness, the College of Agriculture, DER and the Secretary of Agriculture to do impact studies on the legislation that is forthcoming,” Brandt explained. Brandt expressed hopefulness that a council of this type would be more able to define the agricultural studies more fully. In closing his remarks, Brandt told the audience that the Ag Committee is currently working on legislation to define and control farmer’s cooperatives in an effort to prevent problems in that area in the future.
