Mrs. Cox is a Lancaster
County antique dealer. She
operates a shop in their
home, a pre-Revolutionary
house built by a nephew of
Hans Herr, at 1015 Kreps
Road in Manor Township.
The former Gay L.
Blevins, she is a native of
Willow Street and a graduate
of Penn Manor High School.
She is also a graduate of
MUlersville State College,
where she received a degree
in art, and attended C.W.
Post College in New York.
She was formerly an art
instructor in the Lancaster
City School System.
Mr. Cox is director of
public relations for National
Central Bank.
He is also a graduate of
Penn Manor High School and
holds degrees m journalism
and political science from
Penn State University.
Active in civic and com
munity affairs, he is vice
chairman for com
munications for the Lan
caster County Republican
Committee, a member of the
board of directors of the
United Way of Lancaster
County and an advisory
member of the board of
directors of the Farm and
Home Foundation.

With U.S. tobacco exports
setting an all-time record of
|1.2 billion in 1074,
Maryland's unique Type-32
leaf, a light air-cured
species, accounted for
$13,717,000 for that foreign
trade figure.
The Maryland Department
of Agriculture, quoting
USDA sources, reports that
Inst year Maryland tobacco
exports registered a 13.4
percent increase over the
previous year, to reach a
total of 10.9 million pounds,
as compared with 9.5 million
pounds for 1973.
A comparison of the three
largest overseas markets
shows that Switzerland and
Belgium - Luxembourg
increased purchases by 9
and 44 percent respectively,
while shipments to West
Germany were down by 14
percent.
The top quality Maryland
tobacco, representing about
40 percent of the total crop, is
sold abroad, with Swit
zerland traditionally pur
chasing about half of the
state’s exports.
No shipments were made
to Canada or the Latin
American countries last
year, though m the past
those countries have pur
chased some quantities. In
1974, Spain, Portugal and
Australia were among the
importers of the Maryland
leaf.
Maryland tobacco is
prized for its superior
quality, flavor and clean
burning characteristics.
Domestically, only a small
portion of Type-32 is mixed
with other cigarette
tobaccos. In Switzerland, a
much higher percentage of
Tobacco Crop Exported
the Maryland plant is in
corporated in the blends
used by cigarette
manufacturers there.
Maryland farmers in St.
Mary's, Charles, Prince
Georges, Calvert and Anne
Arundel Counties produced
28,800,000 pounds of tobacco
last year. Though that crop
will not be sold until late
spring, the yield has an
estimated value of over $26
million, according to the
Maryland Crop Reporting
Service.
Once the state's most
valuable field crop, tobacco
now ranks third in dollar
