out of the barn before they. were
harmdd by the $70,000 blaze.

corresponding week a year
earlier, but 9 percent above
the previous week. Average
placements during the past
10 weeks were 6 percent
more than a year earlier.
Settings for broiler chicks
were 1,895,000 - 9 percent
below the previous week and
7 percent above the com
parable period a year ago.
Inshipments of broiler-type
chicks during the past 10
weeks averaged zero
compared with 3,000 a year
ago. Outshipments averaged
233,000 during the past 10
weeks, 12 percent above a
year earlier.
Placements in the 21
States were 59,581,000 - 1
percent above the previous
week but 7 percent the same
week a year earlier. Average
placements during the past
10 weeks were 7 percent less
than a year ago.
Settings were 72,538,000 - 2
percent above the previous
week but 6 percent below a
year earlier. The current 3-
week total of eggs set is 7
percent below the com
parable period a year ago.
Neighbors Clean Up
After Bucher Fire
"It was about 4:30 in the
afternoon and we were Just
ready to milk. We'd only
washed down two of the
cows. I glanced up and saw a
puff of smoke coming from
the hay hole. I knew we were
burning. I told my helper to
let the cows out, I went to
call the fire company and by
the time I got back to the
barn it was really going.”
That’s how Warren Bucher
described the start of the fire
last Thursday that consumed
the dairy barn on his
Reistville, Lebanon County,
farm. “We didn’t lose a
single cow. We didn’t even
lose the dog, a six-month-old
pup, although we thought we
did at the time.' After the
fire, we found him hiding in
some bushes.”
Bucher praised the young
man who works as his part
time helper, saying he.kept a
cool head and did everything
right. “Without him, I know
we’d have lost some cows,”
Bucher commented. “My
wife was a big help, too,‘in
getting the calves out.”
The blaze leveled the bam,
destrdyed severaltons of hay
and straw, and 'ruined
several pieces of machinery
stored on the upper- level.

The herd is being housed at
a neighboring farm, and will
be dispersed on April 10 at
the Guernsey Sales Pavilion
in l^ncastcr.
