Astroworld Hotel were told
that 1974 was a landmark
year in many respects. “You
completed and occupied
your own national
headquarters building, your
trustees cut the advertising
budget to allow substantial
increases in the recording
staff and in computer
programming capability. We
have improved member
services significantly,”
executive secjetary Don
Vaniman told the con
vention.
Theme of the convention
was “Grass-fed should be
Simmental bred” and
several speakers em
phasized the European
heritage of Simmental
cattle. It was pointed out that
grain has been high-priced
and scarce in Europe for
years, so Simmentals were
selected for their ability to
produce quality beef on
roughage.
Lou Chesnut, a retired vice
president of the Federal
Land Bank of Spokane
and a pioneer performance
testing cattleman, was
elected president of
American Simmental.
Chesnut operates a cattle
and grain farm near Colfax,
in eastern Washington. He
has developed seedstock
cattle of three breeds - Red
Angus, Charolais and
Simmental - and currently
runs a herd of nearly 600
percentage and purebred
Simmentals.
In his report, Vaniman
said registrations had
jumped from 105,334 head at
the start of 1974, to 203,444 in
February, 1975. Membership
increased from 3,900 paid
actives to 6,550 during the
same period. “And the trend
rolls on,” Vaniman said.
“With 197 of those new
members joining in January
of this year.”
“We have registered 773
purebred Simmental bulls,
imported from 10 countries,
giving us a broad genetic
base. We have a total of 1,351
purebred Simmental heifers
registered. This is only a
fraction of the 133 million
cattle in the U.S. - if you
think you’re too late to get
with Simmental you ought to
think again. We’ve just
begun to make an impact on
this country’s cattle
population,” Vaniman said.
Vaniman also reported
that ASA has 54 full-time
personnel in its national
headquarters at Bozeman,
Montana. ASA played an
active role, he said, in for
ming a World Simmental

Federation which is working
to standardize pedigrees and
performance reporting for
all Simmentals, world-wide.
Vaniman credited the big
increase in members and
registrations to the per
formance of Simental cattle.
Beyond that, he said
progressive breed rules sbch
as open artificial 1 in
semination, no color
restrictions, and making
performance records
mandatory were appealing
to hard-pressed cattlemen.
A third factor, he feels, is
the special service which
ASA offers its members,
especially the Simmental
Management Improver and
Labor-saving Evaluation
program (SMILE) which
makes it practical to per
formance test all animals in
the herd. “The program is
free to members. Just
identifying and culling one
poor-producing cow will
more than pay for your
work,” Vaniman concluded.
In additioh to Chesnut, new
officers include vice
president - Dr. Don Ap
plegate, Versailles, Ken
tucky, and treasurer - Jess
Kilgore, Three Forks,
Montana. Bobby Lawrence,
Leesburg, Georgia and
Ancel Armstrong,
Manhattan, Kansas, were
named to join the three of
ficers on the executive
committee.
New trustees, elected for
three-year terms, are
Colville Jackson, Gloster,

Miles Davies, Deer Trail,
Colorado.
