Charolais Association
The Colonial Charolais
Association ha* announced
the date and location of their
9th Annual Colonial
Charolais Spring Sale. This
year’s sale will have unique
features not found in any
other Association sponsored
Charolais Sale in the United
States.
This series of sales was
initiated nine years ago, and
the Bull Sale portion of the
sale was established as a
Graded Bull Sale - the first
such Charolais Bull Sale of
its kind in the country. Last
year, the Colonial Charolais
Association, which covers all
of the northeastern part of
the United States, revised
the sale to a Gassified Bull
Sale. This new program was
immediately popular with
purebred breeders and
commercial livestockmen
alike. Not only does this
classification system set
definite qualification
standards and requirements
for the sale, but also it aids
the buyer in evaluating the
important characteristics in
each bull. This same
classification system will be
conducted at 10:00 a.m. on
sale morning, Saturday,
March 29, with Herman
Purdy, Professor Emeritus
at Penn State, and Dr.
Randall Reed of Ohio State
being the official classifiers.
Another special feature is
being added this year to the
Classified Bull Sale portion
of the Sale. This unique of
fering will be performance
tested bulls coming from the
140 day test at the Colonial
Bull Test Station managed
by the JCL Cattle Company,
Dayton, Maryland. The
Colonial Charolais
Association is the only
association in the country to
offer the facilities of a Bull
Test Station to its members.
The Bull Test will be com-
pleted March 7, 1975. The
bulls that meet the yearling

weight and gain
requirements established by
the Sale Committee will be
admitted to the sale.
However, these performance
tested bulls must also pass
the classification
requirements, on sale day in
order to make their final
qualification for the sale.
The classification
program for the bulls is
■ broken down into four major
categories with each bull’s
overall classification score
being the total of the scores
for each of these four
categories. The categories
are: Size for Age; Muscling;
Skeletal Correctnss and
Soundness; and Sex and
Breed Character. A
maximum score of 100 is
assigned to each category
making a total possible
overall score of 400. The
rules as established by the
Colonial Charolais
Association read that any
bull that is to sell must have
a minimum score of 300 and
cannot have a score of less
than 70 in any one of the
classification categories.
This is done to eliminate
inferior or unsound bulls
from being sold as breeding
bulls.
This classification -
program is conducted in
dividually on each bull in the
sale ring on sale morning.
Everyone seated in the sale
barn will witness the
procedure and be given the
results on each individual
bull.
All of these procedures
assure the new owner of a
purebred Charolais bull
