master of your farmlands . . . that when you
treat your soil right it will treat you right
firming 1 is one of the most important factors in
keeping your soil in the highest productive
range. By raising the pH from a level below

passage of House Bill 1350,
enacted Dec. 13,1074. Under
the new law, members of the
horse family, other than
those designated for
slaughter, transported to
Pennsylvania must be ac
companied by an interstate
health certificate indicating
negative results on the
Coggins test for Equine
Infectious Anemia.
Equine Infectious Anemia,
also known as Swamp Fever,
is a highly contagious viral
disease which is fatal in 30 to
70 percent of the cases.
Symptoms, which usually
develop two to four weeks
after the animal is exposed
to the disease, include high
fevers, loss of weight,
bloodshot eyes, frequent
urination and a wobbly or
rolling gait. Horses, mules,
donkeys and other members
of the horse family are af
fected by the disease. It is
not transmissable to
humans.
Gap, Pa. 442-4148
Delinger explained that
the Coggins test must be
performed by a federally
approved laboratory within
12 months prior to the date of
entry. A copy of the official
test must accompany the
animal to its final
destination.
Foals under six months of
age are exempt from the
regulation if they are ac
companied by a dam with a
negative Coggins test.
All horses imported into
the Commonwealth must be
accompanied by an ap
proved interstate health
certificate within 30 days of
date of arrival. It should
specify test results, dates,
and the type of vaccine
administered. A copy of the
certificate must be for
warded to the Bureau of
Animal Industry im
mediately upon approval by
the chief livestock official of
the state of origin.
All horses imported for
slaughtering must be con
signed to an approved horse
slaughtering establishment
or an approved Penn
sylvania livestock auction.
They must be accompanied
by either a waybill or an
owner-shipper statement
listing the number.
