Service of The Pennsylvania
State University, point out
that the two-piece, self
sealing lid, is the one that
offers the greatest assurance
of safety in home canned
foods. The flat metal lid with
a sealing compound around
the edge is held in place by a
metal screw band. This seals
at the top edge of the jar. To
use, wipe the jar rim clean
after packing the food. Put
lid on, with sealing com
pound next to glass. Screw

held a meeting recently at
the Holiday Inn with Miss
Frances LeFevre and Mrs.
Mary Stewart as hostesses.
Mrs. Jay Habecker
chaired the meeting with
devotions being conducted
by Mrs. Clarence Reinhold.

to the Society to attend a
meeting on Monday, March
31 from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
at the Willow Street Vo-tech
school. The cost will be $lO
and will include the noon
meal. Current problems will
be considered.
A donation will be given to
Easter Seals Society.

when the band is tight, this
lid allows air to escape from
the Jar during processing.
This is what makes it a self
scaling lid.
The screw bands arc
generally removed after the
jars have cooled for one day.
Screw bands in good con
dition can be reused. But the
metal lids with the sealing
compound can be used only
once. The Extension
specialists caution con
sumers to examine new
v metal lids carefully before
using. Check to make sure
there are no gaps in the
sealing compound around
the edge.
Jars should be of a stan
dard style those used for
the last several decades in
home canning with the
manufacturer's name on the
jars. The Extension
specialists do not recom
mend glass mayonnaise,
pickle and coffee jars
because the sealing edges
may not be uniform and may
not seal properly. Also, these
jars may not withstand the
temperatures of the pressure
canner. Check all jars for
cracks and chips. Use only
those that are made
especially for canning and
are free of imperfections.
