    Swine Dysentery
“A wide variety of drug*
have been used in the
treatment of swine dysen
tery .with various results.
The strange thing about
treating the disease is that
the perfect drug may give
imperfect results... The
symptoms may recur,
necessitating a reevaluation
and probably a change in
drug treatment.”
So states William N.

Chandler, D.V.M., in a
brochure entitled, "Swine
Dysentery,” published by
Commercial Solvents
Corporation’s Animal Health
and Nutrition Division,
Terre Haute, Indiana.
Dr. Chandler indicates
that even under the best
management and
precautions, outbreaks of
swine dysentery have oc
cured. If the disease

becomes established on a
farm, antibiotics In the form
of parenteral, drinking
water, and feed medications
become necessary for
control.
Swine dysentery is a
common, contagious, in
fectious disease charac
terized by inflammation of
the large intestine, and its
cause has not been fully
determined.
“Financial losses, result
from decreased rate of gain,
pig deaths, the overall ex
pense of drug treatment, and
added labor costs. Mortality
is usually low except when
the animal fails to respond to
treatment. In most cases,
the morbidity is high,
especially in confined
facilities.”

Clean
Lampshades
Add longer life and added
beauty to your lampshades
by cleaning them regularly.
And a clean shade lasts
longer, helps give better
light, and adds to the ap
pearance of the lamp, points
out Mrs. Helen Puskar,
Extension home furnishings
specialist at The Penn
sylvania State University.
You can clean some
shades by dusting with a soft
brush or the dusting brush on
your vacuum cleaner. When
dusting, gently move the
brush up and down the
shade. You may want to
clean the shade if dusting
reveals soil and grime.
Check the fabric and con
struction before going ahead
with any cleaning process.
See if washable shades are
sewn to the frame and not
glued. Be sure the frame is
rustproof. Use a solution of
lukewarm water and mild
detergent to wash a lamp
shade. Wash it in a container
large enough for the whole
shade such as a laundry tub.
Dip the shade up and down in
the solution until it’s clean.
Rinse in clear water by
dipping. Dry as rapidly as
possible avoiding direct
sunlight. An electric fan will
speed up drying.
For lampshades covered
with delicate fabrics,
drycleaning is best,
recommends Mrs. Puskar.
But have your drycleaner
check the fabric to see if it’s
drycleanable.
If you have shades that are
glued, clean them carefully.
You can wash plastic shades,
but check a small area
before doing the entire
shade. For parchment or
paper shades use wallpaper
cleaner.
Add lampshade cleaning
and dusting to your
housekeeping duties and
avoid costly replacement.

brief history of research on
swine dysentery, the results
of which show that it may not
be simply one disease but
several which manifest
themselves in a similar
manner, but are of varied
etiology.
According to Dr. Chandler,
the course of the disease
may vary from peracute to
chronic. Morbidity varies
also but usually reaches 80-
90 percent, and up to 30
percent mortality.
Dr. Chandler received his
D.V.M. degree from Auburn
University. After spending
one year with the Illinois
State Livestock Industry as a
district veterinarian, he
served for two years as
veterinarian for Peoria
County, Illinois. He prac
ticed privately in Minier,
Illinois for fourteen years
where he was also district
veterinarian for ARS USDA.
He joined Commercial
Solvents Corporation in
August, 1967. .
