A running theme in many of the letters is that Federal spending should be cut. On the other hand, my mail also contains numerous letters from people who want this program or that exempted from any spending cuts. I hear constantly from those who want to see some specific item in the Federal budget not only left un touched when it comes to cutbacks, but in many cases want that particular ap propriation increased. My point is that I seldom hear from anyone suggesting specific spending reductions. Those in favor of cuts tend to deal in general terms while those wanting money spent refer to particular programs. Maybe what those of us in Congress need to hear more about is what specific things my constituents want reduced. And the specifics should not deal in only the easy answers. For instance, I’m aware that my District does not back spending for foreign aid, and my votes have been consistently against such expenditures. But if foreign aid was completely eliminated, it would only make a small dent in the $52 billion proposed deficit. Another area often discussed for cutting is defense. Here, too, I have supported reductions in the past, and in my tune in the Congress the defense portion PUBLIC SALE OF FARM EQUIPMENT Location: I mile east of Hessdale (Rt, 222), 9 miles South of Lancaster, alone Sandstone Drive, Lane. But how much further do we go before we fail to provide adequate military protection for our purely national in terests? And, since between 60-70 percent of the present defense budget goes for personnel costs, any sub- Boots Saddles 4H Club The Boots and Saddles 4-H Horse and Pony Club held their Feb. meeting at the Farm and Home Center. What kind of to end up throwing large federal spending would you numbers of people out of prefer to see continued but, if work. Therefore, while some necessary, can do without or, additional cuts may be i eaS f can with less of? possible in the military area, that is not the whole answer Some will suggest welfare spending as a source for cuts, and again, maybe some unnecessary money can be eliminated from welfare costs. But in a recent vote I was one of only 38 in the House who was willing to take an unpopular stand on the food stamp program because I believed that students and strikers should be eliminated from the program in order to reduce its expenses. c o C° EVERY WEDNESDAY IS % mf* DAIRY JSBu DAY AT NEW HOLLAND SALES STABLES. And that’s where we need some That is the kind of tough choice that Congress will eventually have to face if Federal budgets are going to get reduced. I, for one, would like to hear from you in the same kind of detail that usually accompanies requests for continued spending or even more spending. If you really believe that Federal ex penditures should be cut substantially, the respon sibility for recommending where cannot be ignored.
