Regulations Tightened
The Maryland Department
of Agriculture has an-
nounced its intent to tighten
existing regulations
covering the costly diease,
Equine Infectious Anemia,
commonly known as
“Swamp Fever.”
Recently the state
agriculture agency
promulgated regulations
which aim to control and
contain EIA, which affects
horses, ponies, mules and
other animals of the equine
species. Animals within the
state found to be infected
with this communicable and
incurable viral infection
must now be permanently
identified and quarantined.
A blood sampling
examination, known as the
Coggins Test, is the
currently accepted
veterinary procedure for
spotting and confirming the
presence of EIA in the
Wampler, dairy calves.
Keystone Degree medals
were presented to Lynn
Struphar, Luke Hcagy,
Kevin Bucks and Tom Fair.
Heagy also was presented
the leadership award and the
DcKalb agriculture award
for production.
The snowmobile dealers
award was given to Deb
tangenecker, Doreen Cooke,
Ken Pierce, and Bruce
Buffenmoycr. The pumpkin
contest winners were Debra
Reigle, David Leßoy and
Greg Hummer. James
Wampler won the Kiwanis
Calf award.
Proficiency awards were
presented to Tom Fair,
animal. EIA poses no threat
to humans.
A further step in the
control process would
require that horses, ponies
and other equines entering
the state after April 30, 1975
be certified free of EIA.
Evidence of a negative of
ficial (Coggins) test, made
within 12 months of date of
entry, must accompany the
animal.
Secretary of Agriculture
Young D. Hance has set a
public hearing on the
proposed regulations for
March 18, 1975 at 10:00 A.M.
in the Conference Room,
