Poultry Specialists Speak at Lancaster
The first in a scries of
poultry education meetings
was held Thursday evening
at the Lancaster Farm and
Home Center, according to
associate Lancaster County
agent Jay Irwin. Speaking to
the, assembled poultrymen
were three of Penn State’s
poultry extension
specialists.
Broiler condemnations
were discussed by Dr. Floyd
Hicks. He pointed out that
Pennsylvania is one percent
higher than the U.S. average
condemnation rate. Leucosis
causes 57 percent of all
condemnations. Hicks noted,
but said this percentage is
decreasing since vac
cination. Another problem
area that can be managed is
ventilation. Proper ven
tilation will reduce breast
blisters and maintain litter
moisture at about 25 percent
year round. Ammonia gas
can be a problem when it
exceeds 20-25 ppm for over 72
hours exposure. The most
important factor in broiler
management is the proper
combination of temperature
and humidity, Hicks noted.
Undergrade and egg shell
damage were discussed by
Professor Kermit Birth. He
illustrated cracked egg
shells like a sledge hammer
bouncing off a rock on the

blows break it. Eggs will
crack with repeated bumps,
however slight, Birth said.
Reducing water tem
perature will reduce thermal
checks, but water tem
perature is only a secondary
cause; the primary cause
will be elsewhere.
Where the stress is due to
contact with hard surface,
don’t over-correct with too
resiliant substance. Eggs
will then bounce into other
eggs causing a worse
problem.
Shell quality goes beyond
surface conditions and
thickness. Sometimes eggs
of the same shell thickness
will have a different
breaking point - a different
shell quality.
To pin point problem
areas, Birth said poultrymen
should identify where
cracked eggs are located in
the carton since a pattern
will show you where it is
happening in your system.
Eggs may be bumped
several times from the nest
and gathering area and not
show up as cracks until
packaged. Continued
maintainance is the most
important factor.

Parasites and their control
was the topic presented by
Dr. Dwight Schwartz. The
Northern Fowl mite is the
most difficult to deal with, he
said. With the advent of wire
floors and cages, we have
few problems with internal
parasites. Fowl ticks are
only a problem when birds
are outside. There are two
kinds of mites; the red mites
which live in cracks and
attach to the birds when at
rest, and the Northern Fowl
mites which live solely on the
birds. Mites feed on blood
creating anemia in the birds.
