Let’s look at just a few of the sewing accessories which guarantee an easy care garment. Thread was probably the first - all thread manufacturers now offer polyester or polyester blend thread. One manufacturer is now offering polyester buttonhold twist. (How many people realize that silk twist is NOT washable - that it was designed for those beautiful, but dry clean only, woolens, silks and linens?) Zippers quickly followed suit. Both conventional and invisible zippers are available with polyester on polyester blend tapes and the metal zipper is practically a thing of the past in most parts of the country, with the advent of synthetic coils. In the last year, we have seen the appearance of knitted zipper tapes - knit associated in Inc mind o! the consumer with the ultimate in easy care. And buttons. Buttons? Certainly not polyester buttons? No, but not all buttons are washable, either. Most metals and woods, and in fact some fancies, are not washable - and most button manufacturers will even recommend removing them during any kind of cleaning. One manufacturer admits that it is not fashions in Paris or New York which has caused sales in metals and woods to fall behind washable buttons in recent years, but the “fashion” in easy care. Remember, if it doesn’t say “washable,” it isn’t! Finally, tapes - trims - braids - ribbons. All are available in polyester or polyester blends. Functional tapes - polyester blend bias tape, seam binding, even 100 percent polyester twill tape for easy-care tailoring. And decorative trims - polyester lace, braids, even rick-rack. Nothing discourages a new sewer faster than a shrunken seam tape or a puckered trim. Plan For Retirement If you plan to retire in the next few years, it’s not too early to start planning for it. The product was sold to the Campbell Soup Company. Two varieties were used, 17 and 28. A former State Champion Tomato Grower, he planted the crop in rows 3- *-2 feet wide and 22 inches between plants in the row. His fertilization practices included a plant starter solution, an 0-20-20 formula, cow manure, and 5-20-20. Seven persons picked the tomatoes and were paid by the basket. Five fungicide sprays and one herbicide application controlled weeds and diseases. Stoltzfus farms 205 acres. His primary income comes from beef and dairy production. 41
