As far as I’m concerned,
you’ll be reading this article
on Washington’s Birthday or
Feb. 22. Now I know, the
banks were closed Feb. 17, to
celebrate his special day so
that many people could have
a three day weekend.
Sometimes I ponder how
the three day weekends are
used to make household
repairs, to travel and visit or
just eat, sleep and watch
television. It is surprising
that Valentine’s Day wasn’t
moved to a Monday also.
Long ago I became the
first full time female em
ployee for a farm
cooperative. Even after
working there for eight
years, there were only six
girls among the 75 em
ployees. Now those were
ideal working conditions and
we enjoyed all the attention

Cooperatives have played
an important part in the lives
of several of my children too.
My daughter was given a
trip to Michigan when she
was fifteen and won in a milk
co-op competition. Both of
my sons have taken tests
which enabled them to
participate in state and
national co-op meetings.
Cooperation is important
in completing a family
project or building a barn.
Just after a co-op meeting
recently, we had a chance to
practice what we preach as a
farmer was unable to start
his car. Before he had a
chance to worry about
getting home another car
drove up and with jumper
cables, he was soon on his
way.
THAT’S NOTHING NEW.
